They're NYC's climate data... knitted by hand. Come by the Arts Center for Open Studios this Saturday, May 16, and catch opening day of the Tempestry Project's installation! The Tempestry Project (@tempestryproject ) is coming to the Arts Center! Created by a community of volunteer knitters, the project features sixteen hand-knitted panels or “tempestries,” each depicting a full year of the city’s daily temperature data rendered into various colors. This is New York City’s first Tempestry Collection, part of the nationwide Tempestry Project, a collaborative fiber arts offering a unique, hands-on perspective on environmental change. Presented in partnership with Madison Square Park Conservancy (@madsqparknyc ) at LMCC's Arts Center at @governorsisland .

The best part of seeing this year-long project displayed for the first time was having the opportunity to chat with some of the makers from libraries around the region. Thank you! #TempestryProject #MHLS #MidHudsonValley #HudsonValleyTempestry #HudsonValleyHistory ❤️ Get @reshare_app@tofu_library We were delighted at the opportunity to support our two Tempestry project knitters at the Mohonk Mountain House yesterday, as part of the Mid-Hudson Libraries Tempestry Collection Gala! 🧵 Each knitter chose a year to knit based on temperature data recorded at the Mohonk Preserve whose records date back to 1895. Each knitter had the opportunity to choose a year that holds special significance for them. Two of our patrons, Nancy and Jody each completed a whole year worth of temperature recordings for the collection. It is an amazing piece of work to see our changing climate displayed by year all in one place. Be sure to check out the travelling collection when it comes to a library near you! Just finished setting up this Tempestry exhibit at Mohonk Mountain House. It was made by a hundred volunteer knitters organized through the Mid Hudson Library System, and depicts climate data from 1895-2024 for the mid Hudson Valley. Data comes from Mohonk Preserve by way of NOAA, where national and international climate & weather data continues (for now) to be available to the public. @midhudsonlibsys @mohonkmountainhouse #TempestryProject #HudsonValleyKnitters #HudsonValleyWeather #ClimateArt #CommunityArt

Crafting a different kind of climate conversation: preparing a Tempestry “Workshop in a Box” to ship out to a middle school for their spring science/art curriculum. Boxes include yarn, velcro, beads, beading hooks, color cards, and three sets of data (global, national, state) for about 30 students at approximately $10 per student. Inquiries more than welcome! ❤️ #ClimateCommunication #TempestryProject #ScienceEducation #STEAM #EnvironmentalStudies

Get @reshare_app@theklostersforum Facts alone aren’t moving the needle. 📉 Science speaks to the rational mind, but Awe addresses the soul. 🌌 When we engage with climate art, something biological happens: Awe dissolves the ego. It shrinks our self-importance and replaces it with a deep sense of collective responsibility. 🤝 At #TKF26, we are moving away from the “normal” management of a crisis. Through the creative sphere, protecting the planet is no longer a chore, it becomes a natural expression of love. 🏔️💙 The fab artists featured in the carousel are: 🎨 Benjamin Von Wong (@vonwong ): Confronting consumption. 🎨 Madjeen Isaac (@madjeenisaac ): Reimagining our relationship to land. 🎨 Robert Smithson (@roberthsminthson.artist ) The iconic Spiral Jetty earthwork. 🎨 The Tempestry Project (@tempestryproject ): Turning climate data into tangible tapestry. 🎨 Olafur Eliasson (@studioolafureliasson ): Documenting two decades of ice loss. What climate art has inspired you? 🖼️👇 #TheKlostersForum #ClimateArt #SystemsChange #ArtforChange

Thank you for participating in the Madison Square Park Tempestry Collection! ❤️ Get @reshare_app@loveoffibers I’m so honored to have been selected to contribute to the NYC @tempestryproject in collaboration with @madsqparknyc this is a beautiful collaborative fiber art project that educates about climate change through data. We will be working on representing how the weather has changed over the years in NYC. I’m so happy to represent my city with knitting. A craft I love so much and a city that holds my heart. Will continue to share and announce when the fiber art exhibit will take place. Stay tuned.
