“A mark is an action. We can look at a painting as the fabrication of an image designed to reproduce a reality. We can look at a painting as a form transferred upon the canvas or even created on the canvas. Or one can look at a painting as a series of marks. Looking at a painting as a series of marks signifies that painting is an action. It is a gesture that one inscribes into the visible world. Mark-making does not entail a heroic form of gesturality: it is not a grand utterance of power, quite the opposite. It is the patient process of participating in the flow of the world.” — Donatien Grau in "Julian Schnabel: Nine Works at Chateau La Coste” - In his new body of plate paintings and paintings on maps for “Italy Through Its Trees” at #PaceNewYork, Julian Schnabel (@julianschnabelstudio ) has found a motif in the umbrella pine trees that were around him while staying in Italy. The physical action of painting associates the brushstroke to the architecture of the pine, and makes the trees into bodily forms, in which branches become like veins and roads to be taken in a map. - Swipe to read about Schnabel's process of creating his latest works, as told to "PaperCity Magazine," for "Italy Through Its Trees," opening May 15 at our 540 West 25th Street gallery. Tap the link in bio to learn more about the exhibition. @papercityhouston @papcercitydallas #JulianSchnabel #PaceGallery #ContemporaryArt #Painting #NewYork
