Celebrating NYC's vibrant public life 🚇 Our final feature highlighting this year's Shared Spaces illustrations is the 81st St–Museum of Natural History MTA Station! "For Want of a Nail," created in conversation with @amnh and installed in 2000, consists of mosaics and reliefs depicting extinct, existing, and endangered animals, inspired by the museum’s collections. 🌎 With a collection of 400+ artworks, @mtaartsdesign programming spans the MTA system’s 5,000-sq-mile travel area, exceeding four million "visitors" each day. Read the Q&A with Tina Vaz, Director, MTA Arts & Design, and browse behind-the-scenes into other public spaces around New York City, from Adams Street Library to @daviscentercentralpark , at the 🔗 in bio. 🎃On October 29, Pumpkitecture returned to the hallowed depths of the @centerforarch Center to close out the 15th edition of the #Archtober festival. The annual architectural pumpkin-carving competition brought together 9 New York City-based design firms as they went gourd to gourd to compete for the prized Pritzerpumpkin!! Although they were provided with a standard set of pumpkin carving tools, firms were encouraged to bring additional (non-flammable and non-hazardous) tools and materials. After an hour and 15 minutes of carving, our esteemed jury picked from the patch of jack-o-lanterns and jack-o-lantern affiliates (see the People’s Pumpkin) and selected Once Future Fright Conductor’s ‘Squashington Square Park’ as the winner of the evening’s highest honors. The jury also bestowed several Pathetic Consolations (Honorable Mentions) upon the other wretched teams. Meanwhile, our dreadful audience arose from their graves to cast their ballots and nominated Modern Designers Engaging Artistic Squash’s ‘Jane’s Carousel’ as the winner of the People’s Pumpkin. 🎉 Congratulations to the winners! Thank you to all the participating firms, the 100+ audience members, and our esteemed jury for a festive evening. #archtober2025 #sharedspaces #pumpkitecture #jackolatern #halloween

We have been celebrating ARCHTOBER, New York City’s Architecture and Design Month, all throughout October! Professor Andrew S. Dolkart, Professor of Historic Preservation at Columbia University School of Architecture, brings you inside Neue Galerie New York’s historic building, one of the few surviving Gilded Age mansions on Fifth Avenue. Dolkart is the author of “1048 Fifth Avenue: From Mansion to Museum,” which recounts the colorful history of the building. In the process, he illuminates the social changes of New York over the course of a century. In conjunction with our 2025 festival theme, Shared Spaces, we're celebrating the city’s public life with a closer look at the series of illustrations depicting various public spaces around NYC, including The Louis Armstrong Center! This series highlights a festival illustration (created by @greaterstudio ) and features a short Q&A about the organization or initiative featured. 🏠 Designed by Caples Jefferson Architects, the Louis Armstrong Center is across the street from the existing Louis Armstrong House Museum in the Corona section of Queens. The two-story, 14,000-square-foot center celebrates the life and legacy of the legendary jazz trumpeter. The design team shared with us how they designed a building that would be able to honor the Armstrong legacy as well as fit into the surrounding neighborhood. In their words: "We tried to both fit in and to stand out. We fit the scale and the mass of the building in with the other neighborhood structures. We responded to overwhelming neighborhood requests that the building call out the exceptional genius in their midst with the curving golden glass façade and canopy." 🎺 Visit the Louis Armstrong Center in person to "feel some of the same kind of joy that you feel listening to his music." #archtober2025 #louisarmstrongcenter #sharedspaces #archtoberhighlights Photos 1 & 2 Credit: Albert Vecerka.
