As immigrants and children of immigrants, our perspectives are shaped by layered histories. Kyungmi Shin's @kyungmi_shin_gray artwork, with its intricate mark-making and pixelated imagery, invites contemplation, revealing the complexity of Asian experiences. We're grateful to have gathered as part of the AAPIAN community, learning about Kyungmi's practice and getting a first glimpse of her upcoming exhibition! 🌱 🪻🪷 🌾 We can't wait to see it! .. One of the most touching moments was when Kyungmi shared how an image of her father sparked her artistic journey. We cherish the intimate studio setting, where we can inspire and learn from each other 🫶🏼. Thank you, Kyungmi, for sharing your studio and insights with us.

During Frieze Week, the Hammer presents the third annual Voices of the Diaspora symposium organized by the Asian American Pacific Islander Arts Network (AAPIAN). The event features two dynamic panels that bring together diasporic and Indigenous artists and cultural workers of color to challenge colonial legacies and reimagine art histories by exploring the complexities of migration, globalization, and decolonization. By fostering critical dialogue on collective action across studios, classrooms, publishing, and curating, the symposium nurtures cultural innovation and diverse expressions of identity to develop new ways of understanding art’s materials, ecologies, and histories. The event begins with a welcome by AAPIAN founding member Grace Oh @graceuoh and welcome remarks by artist Mercedes Dorame, followed by two panels. . Defining Photography Now 2PM Moderator Danielle Shang @danielleshang is joined by artists Todd Gray @toddgrayla , Phil Chang @philchang_ , and Mercedes Dorame @mercedes.dorame for a discussion of photography as a medium: what defines “photography” and how it has evolved in the age of smartphones, social media, and displacement/relocation? . Filipino American Temporalities 3:30PM Curator Clarissa Esguerra @claclaclarissa speaks with artists Maryrose Cobarrubias Mendoza @maryrose.c.mendoza , Patrick Martinez @patrick_martinez_studio , and Miljohn Ruperto @miljohnruperto about how cultural identity is constructed through erasure and accumulation, particularly for diasporic communities. Through the lens of Filipino Americans, the conversation is an opportunity to explore ways to challenge fixed narratives of time, place, and identity. . . . . . . . .

Studio Visit with Phil Chang @philchang_ It was such a pleasure to visit Phil’s studio. We’re so lucky to have had the chance to get insight on his studio process and to experience his works - images on unfixed photographic paper that slowly darken and fade - while in conversation on his conceptual approach to questions of production, circulation, and consumption. Thank you for generously sharing your practice and for the inspiring conversation, Phil!

Join us on Sunday, May 11 from 3:30-6:30PM for a special performance as part of “Psychic Body Recalibration,” a collaborative, multilayered project. Members of the artist collective FXR (Fac Xtra Retreat) will perform a maintenance ritual of Anna Sew Hoy’s monumental artwork “Psychic Body Grotto” at Los Angeles State Historic Park. Sew Hoy will be joined by other members of FXR, including Patty Chang, Pearl C. Hsiung, Amanda Ross-Ho, and Shirley Tse. The group will use touch, sound, and psychic-based modalities to restore the sculpture, ultimately swaddling the work in fabric. The results of the performed treatment will remain on view until Sunday, May 18, when the artists return, along with FXR member Ei Arakawa-Nash, to complete the healing cycle. The artists, joined by their children and family, will carry the swaddling fabrics used on “Psychic Body Grotto” to rejuvenate Hsiung’s “High Prismatic,” a tile-mosaic mural commissioned by LA Metro, located at the Grand Ave Arts/Bunker Hill Station. Learn more and RSVP at the @nomadicdivision bio.
