My project “Ortskontrollfahrt” is now on display in collaboration with @dboersephotographyfoundation and @goetheinstitut_paris as part of the group exhibition “Metamorphosis – States of Change” during @parisphotofair . On Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, the attacker attempted to enter the synagogue with firearms and explosives to kill the people inside. He was stopped at the entrance and killed two people during his escape.

Looking back on 2024 I very much appreciated that @malteuchtmann and @janstaiger asked me to contribute to their book ‘THE PERFECT CRIME: Concerning the Murder of Reality’. Based on the overrepresentation of fictional murder on German television, ‘THE PERFECT CRIME’ uses various forms of photography and AI to interrogate the effect of crime series on our perception and behaviour. My text ‘Image Traces: Forensic Media and the Documentary Gaze’ investigates the potential of visual testimony in the context of criminology and forensics, starting with the early use of photography in the 19th century up to the immediate present, which is characterised by the emergence of ubiquitous digital image infrastructures and new techniques of forensics. The text has recently been made available on the new [IMAGE MATTERS] website: /image-matters/image-matters-discourse/spurenbilder-tatortmedien/. Here we will be publishing new articles at irregular intervals in the future that brings issues from photographic practice and discourses in the theory of image and photography as well as in visual and cultural studies into a dialogue. One of my favourite events in 2024 was definitely the conference ‘AN, IN, MIT. Möglichkeiten fotografischer Kritik’ at Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen (KWI) in cooperation with Pixelprojekt_Ruhrgebiet Ruhrgebiet. Thanks again to @jakobschnetz and Lukas Schepers for the invitation! I was very happy to contribute to the relationship between criticism and documentary practices elaborating on Allan Sekula’s project ‘Fish Story’ and thus expand my engagement with Allan Sekula’s theoretical and practical work. In line with the topic of the symposium, I was able to explain that Sekula’s works not only tell of social injustices and socio-economic developments, but also always reflect on the mechanisms of representation. In ‘Fish Story’, social reference develops precisely at the interface of a critique with, in and on images. © KWI, Photos: eventfotograf.in

Der 28-jährige Fotostudent der Hochschule Hannover Anton Vester gewinnt den VGH Fotopreis 2024, der seit 17 Jahren exklusiv unter den Studierenden des Studiengangs ›Visual Journalism and Documentary Photography‹ vergeben wird. Mit seinem Projekt ›Ohnmächtige Stille‹ widmet sich der 28-jährige Fotograf dem Thema der Organspende, das in aktuellen Debatten eher wenig präsent ist, obwohl in Deutschland rund 8.400 Patient*innen auf der Warteliste für ein Spenderorgan stehen und die Spendenbereitschaft der Deutschen nach wie vor zurückhaltend ist. Anton Vester gelingt eine berührende fotografische Porträtarbeit, die nicht den Erfolgsmoment der Transplantation erzählt, sondern die Lebenswelt der Menschen. In einer beeindruckend behutsamen Annäherung beleuchtet Anton Vester intensiv und persönlich die Situation der Menschen hinter den Zahlen, deren Leben durch Warten bestimmt ist. Sie hoffen und warten auf eine neue Niere, ein neues Herz, auf ein neues Leben – manchmal warten sie jahrelang und manchmal müssen die Menschen sterben, bevor ihre Hoffnung erfüllt wird. Neben der Preisträgerarbeit von Anton Vester erhielten als Finalist*innen des Juryprozesses @jonathanfunk_ Lisa-Maria Gruber und @ludwig_nikulski eine lobende Erwähnung.
