I‘m not very good at showing my work on instagram. I‘ve mainly been using the plattform as a newsletter that fewer and fewer people seem to receive. To further bum out my already struggling algorithm, here‘s the driest post I could think of: a collection of dates. I have a few exhibitions coming up over the next months, and I‘d be more than happy to meet many of you there. A great opportunity to see the work in person! Way better than instagram anyway. I‘m especially excited to show excerpts from my U.S. project „False Prophet Radio“. I am still working on it, but the end is slowly coming into view. About time. Maybe I‘ll finally show a larger selection here at some point. But as always, I‘d rather do it in Person. See you there!

What an incredible feeling to be able to announce my first book. „Zwischen den Jahren“ will be released with GOST books in January 2024. You can preorder it now on my website. The book is the final form of my project „Between the Years“, expressing and documenting the feelings of growing up in times of Covid. I am so thankful to everybody involved in the process of working on this project over the past years. This would not have been possible without the trust by the amazing people at @gost_books , the guidance by mentors and editors, the support of my friends and the collaboration with the protagonists of this work. Thank you! In the last slides of this post you see a collection of past dummys of the project- and ultimately a very happy me when holding the final book for the first time a few weeks ago. It is bound in red and yellow paradiso cotton and was beautifully printed at EBS in Verona. It is also the first GOST book in a landscape format…

DE: Ausstellung Valentin Goppel – Between the Years / Panzerhalle / Wellnesscamp Düne 6 In „Between the Years“ richtet Valentin Goppel den Blick auf die Lebensphase zwischen Jugend und Erwachsensein. Begonnen während der Corona-Pandemie begleitet er Freunde in Momenten des Wartens, des Aufbruchs und der Orientie- rungssuche. Die Bilder zeigen fragile Augenblicke einer Generation, die ihren Platz erst noch finden muss. So entsteht ein Porträt der Adoleszenz – einer Zeit, in der Möglichkeiten offenstehen und zugleich vieles in Bewegung ist. --- ENG: Exhibition Valentin Goppel – Between the Years In “Between the Years,” Valentin Goppel turns his gaze to the phase of life between youth and adulthood. Begun during the COVID-19 pandemic, he accompanies friends in moments of waiting, new beginnings, and the search for direction. The images capture fragile moments of a generation that has yet to find its place. The result is a portrait of adolescence—a time when possibilities are wide open and, at the same time, much is in flux. The phrase ‘Zwischen den Jahren’ describes the time between Christmas and New Year—the time between years. It is the title of Valentin Goppel’s book which was published at the start of 2024. Valentin uses the phrase to act as a metaphor to explain the period of transition between child and adulthood, and the sense of suspended time or paralysis between before the Covid pandemic in 2020 and an unknown future. On New Years Eve in 2020, Valentin began to photograph his friends and acquaintances in an attempt to both process and represent the disorientation he felt during the time of Covid. Through taking pictures of his friends he found a way to deal with the uncertainty. It wasn’t difficult for him to explain to them the pictures he was looking for— they were all in the middle of the same situation and felt connected in a state of limbo. ‘I tried to find ways to express the diffuse of feelings of growing up in the ‘time of corona.’ Not knowing where to hold on when everything is shaking around you may just be natural during the period in life when one is no longer a child, but not yet an adult. The pandemic worked as a catalyst to my disorientation, bringing to light the inner conflicts that had been well contained by the right environment and sufficient distraction. They finally broke free and took the space they had always silently demanded.’ @valentin.goppel

Frontpage!! @spiegelmagazin just published pictures from „Zwischen den Jahren“, including the amazing @chilledbaguettecat on the COVER! I am very grateful that the series still seems to resonate as a symbol of young people’s feelings. It is equally sad that so little has changed for my generation since Corona. With this publication, I am especially grateful for the little text about my project. (Slide 4) That this very personal and “unobjective” work is repeatedly shown in a journalistic context doesn’t come naturally. I am very thankful to great editors such as @_nicole_neumann_ , and I am especially grateful for the immense care that went into this particular article. For anyone interested in the series, It was published as a book at @gost_books last year. I still have about 30 copies in stock. Promise, it will arrive in time for Christmas… Thank you a lot! ♥️♥️♥️

For @nytimes I photographed and filmed Michael Stücke and his sheep in Löhne, Westfalen. The shepherd has a special mission: rescuing gay rams that were once destined for slaughter. On most farms, „male oriented“ rams would be discarded, as they refuse to mate with females. On Michael’s farm, they can now live safely. Their wool is sheared by Michael and will soon appear in a fashion collaboration between @rainbowwoolofficial and @grindr , carrying a message of compassion and pride. It was wonderful to work on this story! Thank you for the assignment @christyyyyk Text by @vvfriedman
