La Albufereta was built in the 1960s as a new way of living by the sea, based on the modernist vision of Juan Guardiola Gaya. The buildings were designed to work with the Mediterranean climate, using large terraces for shade, natural airflow, and walkways that connected people directly to the coastline.
High density was understood as a way to connect the community in a compact pedestrian oriented environment with shared public spaces and openess to the sea. Between the privatization processes of the 1980s and coastal laws that declared the first 100 meters from the shoreline into public space, responsibilities for maintaining the seafront lost track. Today, rising sea levels, stronger storms, and coastal erosion are pushing the future of the area into growing uncertainty.
