In a city known for innovation, it’s rare to find moments that genuinely reshape creative communities. Works in Progress (
@worksinprogress_sf ) has become that catalyst for Bay Area design, offering a platform that feels both timely and necessary. As the design scene flourishes between tech startups and traditional craft, this exhibition series has created a space for discovery, dialogue, and celebration of local talent.
What began as a satellite show during FOG Fair has evolved into something far more vital. Through two successful iterations, curators Kate Greenberg (
@kate.hands.co ) and Kelley Perumbeti (
@kelley_perumbeti ) have carefully orchestrated a new kind of design showcase. one that prioritizes community over commerce. Their vision and dedication have created exactly what the Bay Area’s design community needed: a platform that feels both ambitious and intimate, professional and personal. WIP I introduced individual voices through intimate furniture pieces, while WIP II explored collaboration through paired designers creating screens. Each show has built upon the last, weaving together the threads of Bay Area’s emerging design narrative.
For its third chapter, Works in Progress partners with California College of the Arts to examine our relationship with public space through the lens of the public bench. a silent pillar of urban landscapes that represents both solitude and community, personal contemplation and shared experience. The exhibition transforms into an interior landscape where personal and public boundaries blur, with each piece offering a unique meditation on memory, identity, and place. From sculptural forms that capture environmental data to pieces that draw from coastal materiality, these works celebrate the importance of individual experience within our shared environment. The show proudly features six CCA alumni, highlighting the school’s vital role in nurturing Bay Area craft and design.
