I recently shared my bare-bones, back-in-the-day TIGI educator hand drawn head sheet for Ed Gein, and coming into the last few days of MUAHs voting was a great excuse to share some of the other haircuts that supported this story. Let me share an unsung story of the haircut… ✂️ After the creative meetings, the wigs begin their journey designed by our fearless Department Head Barry Lee Moe, with color and texture thoughtfully decided. Hair is then selected and crafted at Studio Pickens. That’s only the first chapter before anything ever reaches the screen. Next comes the cut. The haircut is the foundation the architecture that allows a wig to live truthfully in its period. Tried-and-true hairdressing techniques bring us back in time, while modern haircutting methods refine the shape and precision needed for camera. Staying true to period shapes is essential, allowing the sets to support the silhouette once everything comes to life. That balance is what turns technique into storytelling. These head sheets represent the quiet, technical haircutting stage: shaping, proportion, and continuity. Period work is built in layers, and even when you’re not responsible for the full look, every contribution matters. We’re honored to be nominated for the Local 706 Makeup & Hair Stylists Guild Awards for MONSTER Season 3: The Ed Gein Story in Period Hairdressing for a Television Series. These are guild awards, and that makes this recognition especially meaningful. I am so honored to be nominated alongside Barry, George, Michele and Randy. CROWNS. 👑🖤✨ I’m deeply honored and genuinely grateful to have contributed Hair and Makeup to “CROWNS: My Hair, My Soul, My Freedom” with the brilliant @sandrofilm . This book came to life through a beautiful international collaboration with Hair + Makeup artists in different countries, and I’m humbled that my work is the most featured throughout the book and has been received with so much celebration and love. For over 30+ years, my hands and heart have been devoted to African American hair and makeup, from set life to salon life, from the pages of Black hair magazines to beauty campaigns, and this project feels like a full-circle moment of purpose and pride. And the soul of it all… the stunning poetry by Patricia Smith adds a reverence and power that stays with you long after you turn the last page.
