We're taking Michigan seriously as a producer of great wine. (I know! Drink local!)
Take a drive up the lake and stop by the three wineries we're loving now. Link in bio for the details.

Built in 1886 and now on the market at $3.95 million, this five-bedroom residence in Old Town once belonged to oleomargarine magnate John F. Jelke. When Jelke left in 1921, photographer Mabel Sykes bought it for $80,000.
When Sykes moved in (movie star Rudolph Valentino was a favorite portrait subject), a news item indicated that she had plans to turn the billiard room into a studio “to be used exclusively for registering the charms of the Gold Coast beauties.”

The food at @oxbarchicago is forthright and easy to love, writes dining critic @jdkess — though he warns you’ll need to be patient with the service staff, who are still learning to coalesce.
In his latest review, John sings the praises of chef John Asbaty's skillful seasoning, excellent veg dishes, and truly sharable portions.
“Order one fewer entrée than the number of people at the table and overdo the vegetables. ... Those rainbow carrots, roasted in a mixture of coffee grounds and salt, meet up with pickled cherries and spicy harissa on the plate.”

It wasn’t all that long ago that progressives had the momentum on the City Council. But they are no longer in control of the agenda. Instead, they’re playing defense, trying to protect what they already gained.
So how did we get here? The City Council’s Progressive Reform Caucus still has 19 members — the same as in 2023. But many of the other alders who once voted with it have joined forces in the so-called Common Sense Caucus, united in putting a check on the mayor’s power, most notably by rejecting his last budget and writing their own.
Could additional progressive measures still be passed by the City Council? “Not in this term,” says Alderperson Andre Vasquez, referring to the mayor’s remaining time in office, “because he bungled it that bad.”

Horseracing once had a devoted following of gamblers. But Hawthorne Race Course, the last remaining track in the Chicago area, has declared bankruptcy — putting in doubt the future of racing here.
Writer Edward McClelland once frequented the region's tracks, falling in with a strange cast of horseplayers over a decade.
“It’s a vanished world, but for a glorious moment, it was ours.”

As @colbertlateshow comes to an end, one of its longtime writers, Chicago-area native Brian Stack, looks back on three decades in the comedy TV trenches.
We spoke with the former Second City and iO Theater performer on his creating memorable characters for national audiences, how his former late-night bosses differ (who's funnier: Conan O’Brien or Colbert??) and how refreshing it is to write about drunk raccoons instead of Donald Trump.

When in Mississippi, dining editor @amycavanaugh always seeks out catfish. The closest that has come to finding her preferred style of the dish in Chicago is at @cleos_southerncuisine .
“Kristen Harper's menu centers on fried chicken and catfish, both of which I recommend. But the catfish, with its cornmeal crust and Creole spice, is special.”
