Before shooting began for Dune 2,
@mowatdonald HOD/designer, tactfully snagged Austin up within a small window to get his life cast taken. Yes we did an actual life cast. Austin Butler’s life cast/teeth impressions were done by myself and
@aaron_globerman with Donald, here in LA. We did a full head and shoulders cast in ‘body double’. The head mold was then promptly packaged up to be sent off to Sweden to
@themakeupdesigners to design and create Feyds prosthetics. I made veneer dental appliances to Donald’s approved design(which was all black teeth and gums).
An early pre-picture initial makeup test on Austin was done in London with only Donald Mowat, Love Larson, and Eva von Bahr which was the actual establishment and design approval by the director for the final look in the film.
Once in Budapest a 2nd makeup test was done with myself, Love and Donald, to get me on board and up to speed. This was the first time I had the opportunity to apply prosthetics with Love Larson. Love was professional, quite gracious and open to creative input. Application exercise, paint process, and technical approaches were fielded.
Close to shooting, I had unfortunately caught Covid. I ended up missing the first 3 days of Feyd’s work. It was being shot in infrared and was black&white with a lot of brights. In my absence,
@adrian_rigby and
@niki_de_jong_fx had done a fine job under quickly unfolding circumstances,…especially with how the the hair prep was approached. So we decided to keep this as it worked well in the heat and environment. Niki, then later Brogan did this prep portion with
@pip_wham .
After getting into the swing of things, some adjustments were made along the way and the process evolved and refined as we went, as often happens. I airbrushed Austin’s makeup using
@skinillustratorofficial and iso colors formulating a paint scheme and color order to match approved design, then Austin would hit Donald’s chair for final touches to be camera ready. After the arena fight sequence was completed, Feyd would appear in the film where he would be seen clearly in color. Niki stayed on until
@brogan_sharp_ became available to jump on board as planned earlier on by our HOD.⬇️
