What a meaningful way to close out the year! We’re deeply honoured to have earned a 2025 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence! Inspired by the working forms of Ontario farm architecture and the traditions of our family’s Friulian roots, the winery is envisioned as a place of gathering — shaped by land, climate, and craft. From sustainable systems to shared spaces, every element is considered by our architects, Giannone Petricone, with great intention and care. Thank you to the jury for seeing the heart of this place. Thank you to every team member for being an integral part of this vision! From the jury: “The design expands the possibilities of a winery while embracing and warming the palette.” From the architect @gpaia : “Volta is inspired by the informality of Ontario farms now infused with an agrarian sublime that magnetically draws each redefined ‘farm shed,’ ‘silo,’ ‘barn’ across a covered courtyard that unspools to the exterior with deep overhangs to tame the unique microclimate with details mined from the particulars of its rich site.” From the landscape architect @janetrosenbergstudio : “JRS is proud to serve as the project’s landscape architect, leveraging the site’s unique terrain, limestone-rich soils and agrarian history to support a winemaking process grounded in the landscape’s quiet beauty and charm.” Render by: @officeiso Link in bio, to read more!

Our vines have been slumbering soundly all winter long, embraced by protective vineyard blankets otherwise known as geotextiles. 😴 In our cold climate, using geotextiles eliminates the need to till large amounts of soil around the vine bases to cover them, preserving soil structure, reducing erosion and preventing rot. We are so excited to welcome spring and see what abundance will flourish this season!

Let’s talk about amphora-aged wines. What is an amphora? It’s a vessel traditionally made from clay or terracotta, used in ancient civilizations to store and transport wine. Some were even lined with resin or beeswax to make them watertight. Today, amphorae are often used for fermentation and aging. Because the material is slightly porous, it allows for gentle oxygen exposure, softening tannins without adding the flavours you’d get from oak barrels. I had the chance to see some incredible preserved amphorae while visiting Pompeii. It’s fascinating to think about how ancient civilizations made and aged their wines, and how these clay vessels can still influence flavour today. I recently tried a Chardonnay from @voltaestate which was aged for eight months on its lees in a sandstone amphora. I got immediate notes of peach with a subtle seashell salinity. Such a delightful Chardonnay. I’m also looking forward to Volta’s highly anticipated opening in Prince Edward County. Have you ever tried an amphora-aged wine? Let’s chat about it! #amphora #amphorawine #wineeducation #princeedwardcounty #thegingerfoodie

We are so proud to introduce Carrie Rau to the Volta family! For Carrie, wine is a passionate evolution of a lifelong culinary journey, the bridge between kitchen and dining room. As a WSET instructor, she lives for the moment a room shifts, when complex pairing theory clicks and someone suddenly understands why what’s on the plate and what’s in the glass just might just change their life. At Volta, she experiences wine full circle. Carrie masterfully navigates the adrenaline of harvest, turning two months of high-octane energy on the crush pad into quality-driven precision and fast-paced, unbreakable teamwork. In the tasting room, her production knowledge and sommelier background are the perfect blend. Having lived the vintage, the climate, the fruit, the craft, she tells the story behind each glass. Carrie knows that wine offers the gift of a story, and she is a beautiful storyteller. Drawn to Prince Edward County’s rhythm and pace, Carrie is reminded of the creativity and seasonality of growing up in Stratford. Balancing the summer rush with winter’s oportunity to read, travel, and continue her wine studies, she carries every season into each glass.
