W-ALIS work in development with @brandxinc artist residency. Scene 1/3: Destruction. Brooms shattered, cultural self-harm. A Spanish marching song plays. The bull fighter, flamenco dancer and missionary tell me what to do with my body. This is my filipino cultural death, and beginning of a greiving process. The music gets distorted as pain, guilt and anger set in. The broom becomes a whip, to punish me. In W-ALIS, mourning becomes movement. A performance that navigates the space between memory, myth and grief. It is a collision of dance, sound, hand-crafted costuming. A ceremonial act that invokes the dual gestures of sweeping and letting go. The work draws its name from the Tagalog walís (broom) and alís (departure). I mourn my dead father, whose grave my mother sweeps, and for my departed myself, eroded through assimilation. Exploring all that can still be reclaimed.
