2025 THROUGH THE EYES of 🔺Duncan🔻„I’ve been behind a lens for a little over 15 years, primarily documenting festivals. More recently, my focus has shifted toward curating photographers and videographers whose artistic approaches align with each event, with the aim of translating a festival’s intention and lived experience as honestly as possible.
I began documenting Garbicz in 2018 and 2019, returning again in 2025.
A close friend put me forward for the role, and being accepted was something I didn’t take lightly, especially given the festival’s no-photo policy, one I paradoxically agree with. Because of this, I approached the work with a clear intention: to capture the experience respectfully, remaining as unobtrusive and invisible as possible.
Across those first two years, I met many inspiring people within the crew while documenting their work - from the challenges of construction through to how the festival ultimately came to life. Capturing that full journey mattered to me: the raw moments, the behind-the-scenes, and the deeper intention behind it all. The imagery from those years remains some of my favourite festival work to date, largely due to how open the crew were and how boundless the creative process felt. It was a reminder of why I began documenting festivals all those years ago.
At its core, it’s always been about storytelling. Whether through a single frame or a series, I aim to let narratives unfold without explanation. The focus is on feeling - open to interpretation, occasionally challenging, sometimes abstract. At Garbicz, that translated to fewer faces, more silhouettes, darker tones, and an emphasis on what the experience represents beneath the surface.“
