🎙️ First public talk on the revival of Hong Kong Type! Last Saturday I had the honour of speaking at @typographytheorypractice Typography Theory Practice , hosted at Leeds Beckett University. It was my first public presentation in the UK, sharing my research “Reviving Hong Kong Type: When archival Chinese movable type becomes contemporary practice.” The talk explored how historical metal types and matrices could be analysed and revived through a new framework, connecting design history, cultural identity, and typographic innovation. ELENA VEGUILLAS Truman’s through practice This talk shows show how research can be developed through practice and as an ‘instrument for reasoning’ (Tufte, 1983). In particular, it shows how my own practice as a graphic designer has helped me understand how Truman’s, a historic London brewery, used architectural lettering on their public houses as part of their branding activity from the end of the nineteenth century until the Second World War, a formative time in the development of concepts that have later been understood in terms of branding and corporate identity (Henrion & Parkins, 1967; Olins, 2004). The main case study, Truman’s Brewery, claimed to own more than 1,000 public houses in England, of which 500 located in London and formed the basis of my research, including hundred of photos, documents, reports, and other archival material, of public houses that showed how Truman’s used architectural lettering as part of their branding. To make sense of this material, I combined archival and historical research with my own design practice, not to reinterpret or redesign the past but rather to help make sense of it, to transform existing knowledge and to construct new knowledge (Orna & Stevens, 1995).
