What is a diagram? Or why do we diagram? What function does the diagram serve? What methods are used in the creation of a diagram? Where does a diagram begin, or end? What relationship does the diagram have to typography? What is the process, the histories, the problems, the biases, the opportunities of the diagram? Senior lecturer Paul Finn unpicks the idea of the diagram as a way of thinking, writing, and organising knowledge. Follow the link in @csmgraphics  bio to watch the full talk. Paul delivered this talk at ‘Typography Theory Practice’ @typographytheorypractice , a one-day conference on Saturday 25 October 2025 at Leeds Beckett University @lbu_lsa , organised by Professor Fraser Muggeridge, that explored how typographic theories and propositions can manifest in practice, can be used to explain practice, and become practice. The conference brought typographic theory and practice together across a range of contexts and applications.

Making “room for joy.” 🌄 Born from revisiting drawing as a way to process memory and emotion, ‘Sweet Escape’ by MA Graphic Communication Design graduate Lily Kong @lilykongyuet is a series of observational landscapes that transform everyday moments into personal reflections. The series has expanded into a collection of prints with Drool @drool_art , alongside an artist book produced with support from the London Centre for Book Arts @londonbookarts . Reflecting on finding new audiences for the work, Lily says: “It helped me see potential in even my most deeply personal pieces. It gave me space and confidence to spotlight the parts of myself I used to keep quiet.” Follow the link in @csmgraphics bio to read the full story on It’s Nice That @itsnicethat .

Ghost in the Loop: The compression zone ’The Compression Zone’ is a video game performance by artist Shaheer Tarar* that explores compression algorithms as one of the primary engines of world-making today. Shaheer performs the game live, navigating a perilous, multi-resolution dungeon where all the world’s data is sent to be compressed. Part autobiographical, part grounded in archival research on twentieth-century nationalism, and partly besieged by memes and conspiracy, the game moves through uneven resolutions of rendering and rigour—journeying across South Asia’s digital borderlands and through fibre-optic cables in the Pacific. 📅 Friday 29 May 2026 ⏰️ 6pm–8pm BST 📍 The Photographers’ Gallery 🔗 Link in @csmgraphics bio *Shaheer Tarar is Practices Tutor: Computation on BA (Hons) Graphic Communication Design and Lecturer on MA Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins, UAL.

What do you see when you hear the word Iran? For BA Graphic Communication Design graduate Mahshid Salehnezhaad, Iran is colour, community, daily life and the quiet poetry of ordinary moments. Her project, Seeing Beyond the Surface, challenges one-sided media narratives by blending photography, embroidery and silkscreen printing to explore the tension between perception and reality. Using black-and-white photographs from visits home and family archives, Mahshid stitches colour back into the image. Flowers, fruits, symbols and phrases become gestures of joy, identity, humour and resilience. At the centre of the work is a large textile installation made entirely of stitched photographs, inspired by the cultural meaning of Persian rugs as vessels of story, history and identity. Through thread, image and material, Mahshid asks us to look closer, question what we think we know and discover something deeper beneath the surface. Work by @mahslnd @csmgraphics
