Timbercraft: Lost Tectonics from East Asia ⛩️ This richly illustrated book explores the remarkable structural logic and craftsmanship of timber architecture from China, Japan, and Korea. Through nine case studies - spanning more than 1,400 years - Timbercraft reveals the precision and beauty of joinery systems that have stood the test of time. Part history, part design study, part visual archive: Timbercraft is an invaluable resource for architects, designers, builders, and anyone curious about the quiet intelligence of timber construction. The main content of ‘Hella Jongerius: Whispering Things’ consists of four chapters that follow the structure of the retrospective at the Vitra Design Museum and explore Jongerius’s oeuvre thematically. Interwoven with these chapters is the archive section (see previous post). Each project is linked to the archive through its title, which is rotated 90 degrees and printed in blue, as in the archive section. The titles are set in a larger size and positioned close to the edge of the page to facilitate navigation. Image captions are kept small and set in an ultra wide text column, an unusual choice for us, in order to allow the images to be shown at maximum size. For the same reason, images sometimes overlap to reveal their details as clearly as possible. The work of Jongeriuslab does not fully reveal its richness and beauty in postage stamps. #preview #archiveofgraphicdesigntypologies #studiojoostgrootens @hellajongerius #jongeriuslab @vitradesignmuseum #vdmhellajongerius #whisperingthings @mateokries @glenn_adamson @marcella_ha @alice.rawsthorn #susannegraner @christelvesters #rolffehlbaum @paolantonelli #louiseschouwenberg @studiojoostgrootens #joostgrootens @dimitrijeannottat #juliedasilvalenoir @gzdmediagmbh @nadinekesslerdesign @dza.druck

Two previous monographs on Hella Jongerius feature a vase on the cover. ‘Hella Jongerius’ (Phaidon Press, 2003; design by @coma.artbooks ) depicts the Red White Vase, while ‘Hella Jongerius: Misfit’ (Phaidon Press, 2010; design by @irma_boom_amsterdam ) represents the Coloured Vases, Series 3 through customisable electrostatic stickers. The cover of ‘Hella Jongerius: Whispering Things’ also features a Jongerius vase. This time the Falling Vases Paintings (2008), from which small rectangles were cut for comparison with Paul Baumann’s ‘Neue Farbtonkarte’, a key reference for Jongeriuslab. These cut-outs reveal the canvas beneath. Simply reproducing a photograph of the paintings would not adequately convey this act of iconoclasm. For the cover, the rectangles were therefore burned out using a laser-etching technique, exposing the cardboard underneath, albeit in a caramel tone resulting from the burning process. Two different paintings from the Falling Vases series are used for the covers, one for each of the two language editions. #format #archiveofgraphicdesigntypologies #studiojoostgrootens @hellajongerius #jongeriuslab @vitradesignmuseum #vdmhellajongerius #whisperingthings @mateokries @glenn_adamson @marcella_ha @alice.rawsthorn #susannegraner @christelvesters #rolffehlbaum @paolantonelli #louiseschouwenberg @studiojoostgrootens #joostgrootens @dimitrijeannottat #juliedasilvalenoir @gzdmediagmbh @nadinekesslerdesign @dza.druck

‘Hella Jongerius: Whispering Things’ is the publication accompanying the retrospective of the same title at the Vitra Design Museum. At the center of both the book and the exhibition is the studio archive of Jongeriuslab, acquired by the museum in 2024. The book presents two interwoven flows of information: four chapters that follow the structure of the exhibition and explore Jongerius’ oeuvre thematically, and, woven into these, the archive section: a rich, loosely chronological, primarily image-based database. The archive distinguishes itself from the rest of the book through its materialisation: it is printed on a rough, cream-coloured, bulky paper, with texts rotated 90 degrees to emphasise the visuality, and printed in blue similar to that of the book’s binding thread. Mateo Kries, Glenn Adamson (eds.), ‘Hella Jongerius: Whispering Things’, Vitra Design Museum, 2026, with texts by Alice Rawsthorn, Glenn Adamson, Marcella Hanika, Susanne Graner, Christel Vesters, Rolf Fehlbaum, Paola Antonelli, and Louise Schouwenberg. Design: SJG / Joost Grootens, Dimitri Jeannottat, Julie da Silva Lenoir. Project management: Nadine Kessler. Lithography: GZD Media. Printing: DZA Drucker zu Altenburg. #index #archiveofgraphicdesigntypologies #studiojoostgrootens @hellajongerius #jongeriuslab @vitradesignmuseum #vdmhellajongerius #whisperingthings @mateokries @glenn_adamson @marcella_ha @alice.rawsthorn #susannegraner @christelvesters #rolffehlbaum @paolantonelli #louiseschouwenberg @studiojoostgrootens #joostgrootens @dimitrijeannottat #juliedasilvalenoir @gzdmediagmbh @nadinekesslerdesign @dza.druck

I’m interested in pre-digital, cheaply produced printed matter, such as travel guides. Back when reproducing photographs in print was still complicated and expensive, and colour printing even more so, these books had to work hard to structure information and engage the reader. This travel guide to Great Britain succeeds wonderfully. It uses a system of symbols in the margins of the text columns, along with two contrasting type weights within the body text, to help readers navigate the page. The guide also includes maps and plans of historical buildings, but it’s especially the text pages – with their bold words and fun little drawings – that I’m strangely obsessed with. Franz Melichar, Christian Perrin & Margarete Stillger, Grande Bretagne (Les Guides bleus), Paris: Hachette, 1979. #language #archiveofgraphicdesigntypologies #studiojoostgrootens
