2025 was a year of challenges and joyous moments alike. It was my 30th year at the Vitra Design Museum and my 15th year as the director of this amazing institution. I saw my wonderful daughters grow, and my beloved companion and wife @nadineschemmann continuing her career as an artist with her unique energy and determination, despite all obstacles. After some challenging years, I feel ready for a new year full of love, inspiration and new projects…. I usually don’t post selfies, but for an end-of-year post it feels appropriate to share some of the moods of 2025.

More from my visit to Hangzhou last week: the Liangzhou Campus of @chinaacademyofart , whose architect clearly took his lessons from Le Corbusier… #architecture #modernarchitecture #contemporaryarchitects #chinesearchitecture #hangzhou #lecorbusier #vitradesignmuseum

8 days, 4 cities: Paris, Munich, Doha, Hangzhou. Pictures show one of the four Campuses of China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, this one with Wang Shu‘s masterful buildings and Alvaro Siza‘s building for China Design Museum. Thanks @chinaacademyofart and @design_intelligence_award for having me and having organized a brief, intense and very instructive visit to a city full of creative visions (mostly around tech and AI). @chinadesignmuseum #design #designresearch #designhistory #chinesedesign #designlovers #designmuseum #vitradesignmuseum

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Frank Gehry, the architect of our wonderful museum building. Gehry’s building for the Vitra Design Museum was a miracle, one of the unique cases where an institution and a building become one. When the Vitra Design Museum opened in 1989, it was like an UFO landed on the green lawn of a German suburb. It was Gehry’s first building in Europe and made our museum famous overnight, even if we started with a small team and a small collection. Gehry’s building was a constant encouragement to explore new ways in exhibition making and to develop an institution without any role model, something unique - like Gehry’s architecture. It made exhibitions look stunningly beautiful and allowed new readings of its space with every new project. Thank you, Frank, for your invaluable contribution to the evolution of the Vitra Design Museum, to the Vitra Campus, and to architecture in general. We will miss you.

Today we‘re opening our exhibition „Nike: Form follows Motion“ in Madrid at the amazing Team Labs space and in collaboration with La Fabrica, two real powerhouses in Madrid‘s vibrant cultural scene. They have added some great exhibits related to Spanish athletes such as @vinijr @alexiaputellas @rafaelnadal and others. The exhibition looks fantastic in this historic building - I love that you can see it in layers from the top floor. Thanks to @teamlabs_ and @lafabrica_ for a great collaboration, to @jaydenaali for the fantastic exhibition design and to @glenn_adamson and @marcella_ha for their inspiring concept. And of course - and once more - to @nike and their Department of Nike Archives DNA for opening their treasure trove for this exhibition. After Madrid, the exhibition will travel on to New York, Atlanta, Phoenix and other places - make sure you see it and buy the beautiful book that we published with the show! . @vitradesignmuseum #design #nike #sneakers #moderndesign #designmuseum #designexhibition #designhistory #exhibition #designlovers #madrid #madridexhibition #sneakerculture #sportsdesign #streetstyle #sportswear #michaeljordan #andreagassi #viniciusjunior #alexiaputellas #rafaelnadal #rafanadal

Today we opened a new building on the Campus, the Doshi Retreat, designed by the late Balkrishna Doshi together with architects Khushnu Hoof and Sönke Hoof. This building is a miracle - a place of contemplation and silence, a piece of land art, an acoustic sculpture. The form cannot be described, it has to be experienced. In the opening talk today, I had the pleasure to talk to the wonderful @khushnu.hoof and @sonke_hoof about their work on this project, from developing its unique form to the collaboration with @arcelormittalgroup on the impressive steel structure. Thank you Khushnu and Sönke for your amazing work - and to Doshi for this last, epic gift. . #architecture #modernarchitecture #balkrishnadoshi #doshi #archilover #landscaping #vitra #vitracampus #vitradesignmuseum #weilamrhein #museenbasel

Congratulations to @vamuseum for their fantastic new storehouse V&A East and huge thanks to Chief Curator @brendanpcormier for having shown us this amazing addition to the museum landscape. What an exceptional place, masterfully designed by @diller_scofidio_renfro as an accessible storage, exhibition and laboratory. Thoughtful curatorial guidance provides countless background stories, while also leaving enough space for the unexpected discoveries across different cultures, epochs and styles… If you are in London this summer, this is definitely worth a visit! #design #moderndesign #vamuseum #museumcollection #designcollection #designmuseum #vitradesignmuseum
