Very not home to announce the arrival of my cookbook, Eating at Home. I’m so deeply proud of what we made: more than a collection of my family’s recipes — a rallying cry to return to mealtimes. To let our cooking, eating and even grocery shopping be our closest connection to capital-B Beauty in the mundane. This thing took a village and thanks are in order: my co-author @rebeccafirkser , my agent @cowlesagency , my editor @c_garces , book designer @emmacampioncreative and the entire @tenspeedpress team. My outrageously wonderful photo shoot crew that camped at our house for a week: @danetashima @mpearljones @allie__ayers @melonskies @katliakos !!! And last but certainly not least, my dearest Issey who pulled the prints you see throughout the book and the cover. How lucky I am to get to say this: we’re going on a book tour. This Spring the world’s greatest homebody (hello) will in fact leave said home to talk about…the magic of home cooking. The recipes, yes, but really — the practice of making space and time when we believe we’re already all out of such precious resources. Returning to our kitchen tables in the face of widespread ROI culture is one of the more radical things we can choose to do right now.  Eating at Home is a rallying call: that when we’ve tried every way to make mealtimes more efficient, our best medicine may be to embrace cooking and eating as a practice. One that makes us more present, more honest, more human.  This Spring I’ll have the chance to share Eating at Home with you in the company of my favorite writers, chefs and fellow entrepreneurs. This is the story of a home — of heritage, and of what can be preserved in the face of seemingly inevitable progress. My Great Grandmother fought to save her 1890 brick Victorian house until it was the last one left on the block. Today it endures as The Mouzon House in Saratoga Springs, with a new opportunity to continue its legacy. After so many years and many a good fight, I know the house will continue on as a beautiful reminder of the merits of staying power.

Lunch Pause, a homecoming: we closed out our third and final seated meal to celebrate Eating at Home back in the Hudson Valley with @latonyayvette . LaTonya graciously opened @_themaehouse to us and the rest came together like magic: a full spread and celebration cake thanks to @katliakos , a joyfully colorful tablescape thanks to @mudaustralia @coyuchi and @damsel_garden , and a last minute gift of sunshine when the weather report had been saying rain all week. @kelseycherry thank you for so beautifully recording this special memory. Wrapped our west coast tour in the very best way: a lunch pause at chez @doingwell for a very Los Angeles spread. Thank you to Michael @pretendplantsandflowers for turning our tablescape in a genuine wildflower meadow and bringing the bucket of chamomile I’d always hoped for. Endless love to Daphne @doingwell for not just hosting but truly welcoming our family in her space. Gratitude to everyone who came, loved the book, and went back for seconds. @katliakos as usual made the menu come to life and wow @jasonlecras I have never had a harder time choosing “just” twenty photos for an IG post. Did I hand letter 25 menus for this? Not no. @havenwellwithin brought us all together and decked us in cashmere shawls. I think this might be a dream. Eating at Home, Trinity Mouzon Wofford’s new book, starts from a clear premise: that the meals we return to each day are our most reliable way into the present. To mark its release, she hosted a seated lunch in Brooklyn, where a carrot cake with lemon turmeric icing—pulled from the book’s wholesome bakes chapter—set the tone. Plush with grated carrot, walnuts, and raisins, sliced thick and lacquered with a sharp, golden glaze, it’s the kind of cake that finds its way to the breakfast table over espresso. July 2023: I asked Issey to take this photo of me with the window of Three Lives & Company, my favorite New York bookstore. At the time, my cookbook was untitled and the manuscript was in its earliest days, but I had a vision of seeing it here in the window one day. Three years later, Troy Chatterton, longtime manager of Three Lives opened @wildsorrelcookbooks across town. And what did I find in the window? Turns out Eating at Home was one of the early top sellers of the shop. Truth be told, I am a little teary thinking of the beautiful way things work out.

Last week’s conversation with @trinitymouzon around EATING AT HOME settled into something really warm and honest. Less about “cooking” in the formal sense, more about eating at home as a practice—rituals, gestures, the ways food fits into the middle of busy lives. Early on, #friendoftheshop @thegordinier joked that he’d been “self-medicating with this book,” which pretty much opened the door to the whole conversation. Real talk. Trinity spoke candidly about being an entrepreneur, a working parent of two young children, food from both the Japanese and the African American diaspora, and figuring out how to feed yourself and your family in a way that feels good but also realistic. Not every meal needs to be ambitious to matter. Dashi scrambled eggs!
