Mighty: A Small Venue With a Big Voice Lands in Te Komititanga
In celebration of @nzmusicmonth , a new musical experience is coming to the heart of the city, and it’s not what you’d expect. From Tuesday 26 May to Sunday 1 June, a custom-built mini theatre called Mighty will pop up in Te Komititanga, offering the most intimate live gigs you’ll find anywhere in Aotearoa. Completely free.
Built around a 10-foot shipping container and clad to look like an old-fashioned theatre - complete with red velvet curtains, a rug and a standing lamp - Mighty offers front-row seats to unforgettable performances from some of our most talented songwriters.
Each show invites just 4–6 people at a time into the cosy interior, where they’ll hear one song, performed totally live and completely acoustic. No mics. No tech tricks. Just voice and guitar or keys.
With 20 performances over the week and a line-up of exceptional local talent, there’s a twist: while all performers will be announced in advance, their set times will stay secret. It’s songwriter roulette, designed to surprise and delight.
Some of our brightest lights and rising stars will be performing, including Tiny Ruins, Anna Coddington, Julia Deans, Lips, Romi Wrights, Phoebe Rings, Jazmine Mary, HINA, PARK RD, Rewind Fields, Jol Mulholland + more.
Mighty celebrates the power of a single song, shared in person.
Live. Acoustic. Solo.

JESSICA PRATT NZ SUPPORT ACTS ANNOUNCED!
MONDAY 9 JUNE - THE PIANO, CHRISTCHURCH with BEN WOODS
TUESDAY 10 JUNE - MEOW NUI, WELLINGTON with BEN WOODS
WEDNESDAY 11 JUNE - BRUCE MASON CENTRE, AUCKLAND with TINY RUINS
Tickets on sale now from Banished Music
The countdown is on for fans of beguiling Californian folk song writer Jessica Pratt and her incredible band, with three very special happening across Aotearoa in just under a month.
Lyttelton’s own songsmith Ben Woods will be joining the bill both on Monday 9 June at The Piano in Christchurch and Tuesday 10 June at Wellington’s newest venue Meow Nui, while the wonderful Tiny Ruins will perform as a duo on Wednesday 11 June at Auckland’s Bruce Mason Centre.
Ben Woods has released two solo albums worth of acclaimed and “ornately gloomy songs” (Tony Stamp, RNZ), Put and Dispeller. He has collaborated with everyone from his Lyttelton brethren Marlon Williams to A Handful Of Dust’s Alastair Galbraith, with a uniquely sound drawing comparisons to the likes of Scott Walker, Sparklehorse, and even Tall Dwarfs. The Quietus praised Ben as being “a weirdly accessible, creaky-yet-meticulous marvel,” and we are excited to have him on the bill for the first two shows of the tour.
Performing at Jessica’s Auckland show as the stripped back duo of songwriter Hollie Fullbrook and her longtime bandmate Cass Basil, this is a rare opportunity to catch Tiny Ruins during their recording phase, as they complete their follow-up to the masterful 2023 album Ceremony. The Guardian once wrote, “Fullbrook can, at times, sound more like Nick Drake than a thousand sensitive boys,” and we are pinching ourselves that this extraordinary addition to the line-up is happening.

Rest in peace, David Lynch. Thank you for all the strange and incredible films, and for Twin Peaks. You put a lot of much-needed love out into the world, and its reverberations will keep going a long time.
Thank you for entrusting me with the smallest drop in the ocean of what you put your name to. Entering a concrete, modernist bunker, my heart thumping, David emerged from the darkness of the cinema - the seats in this photo, I think. He was in a suit, his hair immaculate. He shook my hand warmly, putting me at ease. He ushered me to the kitchen, making us both a coffee - “this is what I call an americano”, he said. “So what might this recording be used for?” he then asked. “Erm, it’s for the Hunger Games soundtrack, potentially”, I said. He smiled ever so slightly. “The only thing I know about the hunger games is right around lunchtime,” he said.
Thank you for telling me about the human heart on a flight you were on, ahead of its transplant - “thank god the wind was behind us”... the Los Angeles dusk light you loved... for showing me your matchbook paintings, for saying a whole lot more besides, including “Sweet Mary Louise!” quite a few times, in exclamation.
Thank you also to Dean Hurley. My heartfelt condolences to all David’s family & friends.
