Title: The Auction Bid
Size: 65 x 55 cm
Medium: Pastel on Paper
Year: 2025
Text: This drawing is the first of a new series of quiet studies of the artist’s father, made after leaving the RCA and returning to Wales to regroup and chart the next steps. It resumes the thread of an earlier body of work, yet the passage of time since the summer of 2024 is palpable in the rendering. Echoing the compositional mood of Cézanne’s Boy in a Red Vest, the scene captures a moment of concentrated anticipation: the preparation of a bid for firewood at a local auction, where chance determines the shape of any deal to be made.
Tom Evans, is an artist whose work explores memory, familial relationships, and the quiet poetics of everyday life. He recently completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art (2024–25)

Introducing Tom Evans, @thomaswevans
Prior to joining the RCA, Tom studied remotely with Turps and The Royal Drawing School while living in rural Monmouthshire. He gained Arts Council of Wales funding and has completed residencies in Portugal while starting to exhibit new work.
“I’m currently working a lot with the theme of memory. I try to make my paintings as memorable to the viewer as the memories I’m evoking are to me when I paint them.”
Artworks:
1. The Onlookers, 2025. Oil on Canvas, 210 x 210 cm
2. The Heart of a Dog, 2025. Oil on Canvas, 130 x 200 cm
3. Between Takes in the Pampas, 2025. Oil on Canvas, 130 x 180 cm
4. The Obstacle, 2025. Oil on Canvas, 130 x 180 cm
Rejection: When No Said Yes, is an exhibition that does not resist refusal but lingers in its aftermath, tracing the echoes of what is lost and what is found.
Curating one of my first ever proposals, alongside @virtuosoinmaking & @_nepita

‘The Card Player (V1)’ (2023) pays homage to modernist
masters like Cezanne, its informal setting and arrangement
of objects such as a coffee pot and clock echoing the iconic
compositions. Red uno cards at the centre add a playful,
decisively contemporary touch. The painting is
affectionately known as ‘Papa Uno’.
Evans’ mastery of colour is central to his work: cool blue
tones imbue his father’s face with a stoic, monumental
quality, removed from naturalistic representation. This
chromatic choice is deftly counterbalanced by warm
accents of yellow ochre in the upper right corner,
harmonising with delicate shades of light green on the
cupboards and a vibrant splash of light blue on the table at
the lower left. ‘The Card Player (V1)’ exudes joy found in
the everyday rituals of life but also a passing of time.

Tom Evans, currently showing at The Chair, has called his show a triumph! And if a triumph is measured in sales alone then both of these have sold already along with others!
But for me it has been more a triumph for Tom who believed enough in his own artistic practice to email me to ask for a show … and that’s the difficult bit.
If you would like to show with me at The Chair in an artist led exhibition and are feeling nervous then either come and see me or ring me and we can sort this out and who knows you too might ‘triumph’ like Tom!

Selected works from my recent trip to Lisbon. I began working with old photos found at a flea market as a basis for image making during this residency. #turpscc2324
