Installation views of ‘Real Citizens’, open at the Austrian Cultural Forum in London.
“What does it mean to become a citizen of a country that is both new and ancestral?” In this exhibition, artists Jane Mechner and Michael Garner move beyond legal paperwork to explore the personal side of identity and belonging. Through their works, they attempt to give physical shape to their history, bridging the gap between their heritage and their present reality.
Curated by Rodrigo Chaveiro.

ArtEN is pleased to present the work of Jane Mechner as part of our current exhibition ‘London Window’ in Tokyo.
An Austrian-American artist based in London, Mechner’s practice operates at the intersection of observation and satire. Through her precise etchings, she isolates the ‘props’ and symbols of daily life, from uniforms to leisure activities, questioning the structures of collective identity with a graphic, analytical eye.

Thanks to the Austrian Cultural Forum Tokyo for their support @austrocultjapan
teeny little etching ‘friday evening’ 1/1 made on tetrapak with oil paint and with a pasta press flipped on its side.
the drypoint leaves a softer edge than copper and after about 3 prints starts to become more of a ghost image. the lack of control factors compared to my normal print setup was at first frustrating but i’m feeling v open to the magic of uncertainty lately
The Austrian Cultural Forum London is delighted to announce Real Citizens, a new exhibition with works by Jane Mechner @janemechner and Michael Garner @garner.artist , curated by Rodrigo Chaveiro opening on 5 March 2026. The exhibition explores what it means to become a citizen of a country that is both new and ancestral.
Jane Mechner and Michael Garner, both graduates of the Royal College of Art, recently obtained Austrian citizenship based on their family history. In 2019 Austria introduced a new and simplified path to Austrian citizenship for direct descendants (children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren) of people persecuted by the Nazi regime for political, racial, or religious reasons.
In Real Citizens, they move beyond the legal paperwork to explore the personal side of this change.
Exhibition opens 5 March 2026
Private View 6.30 - 8.30
The exhibition will be on view until Friday 17 April 2026

Echo soho | Booth 2
GJG is delighted to take part in the inaugural edition of Echo Soho, a new contemporary art fair championing female-led galleries.
GJG is presenting a solo booth of work by Jane Mechner, whose practice explores repetition, memory, and power through painting. Her current series centres on the carousel, a form that is both dazzling and disquieting, using its continuous motion as a metaphor for historical cycles, political spectacle, and the seductive pull of consumerism.
