According to Google Photos, apparently this is what I was doing on MayDay(!) ten years ago. R&R whilst Community Mapping Ebola in Sierra Leone. Seems worlds ago, but interestingly it feels now like the beginning of a " modern disaster era". With Ivan Gayron, @calimapnerd @americanredcross , @msf_uk (MSF),.and @themissingmaps

From global institutions to grassroots initiatives, we’ve had the chance to work with a wide range of non-profits over the years. It felt like the right moment to bring them together and give them the spotlight they deserve — both for their missions and the design behind them. In the third sector, it is not just about what you say — it is about how you communicate it. Clarity, accessibility, and storytelling can make all the difference. Here are a few of the projects we’re especially proud to have been part of: •Missing Maps (Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)) — mapping vulnerable communities to support humanitarian response •Lass Reden (European Commission) — creating a space for open, meaningful dialogue •European Platform for Democratic Elections (EPDE) — strengthening democratic processes across Europe •MOSAIC (United Nations) — fostering inclusion through cross-cultural collaboration •Torhaus Berlin — supporting a local cultural space in Berlin •Eco Weaver — translating sustainability into clear, actionable communication •STEM Institute for Empirical Research — making complex data on public opinion accessible •AUTILLUS - Kinder- und Jugendbuchschaffende Schweiz — supporting children's and youth literature in Switzerland Curious what we could create together? If you’re working in the third sector and looking for a partner who understands the NGO landscape—let’s talk. @autillus , @stem_ustav , @torhausberlin , @unitednations , @eukommission , @msf_fr , @themissingmaps ,

The Friends of MSF team is excited to announce our first Mapathon event!!!🗺️📍 This is an opportunity for students to make a tangible, real-world humanitarian impact. Participants will learn the fundamentals of remote mapping using satellite imagery, and contribute to a collaborative Missing Maps project tracing roads in the Ouaddai province of Chad. Currently, MSF is working to mitigate seasonal peaks of malnutrition and malaria among children in Chad, and mapping buildings allows MSF staff along with community partners to respond rapidly to nutrition emergencies and disease outbreaks. Please bring a computer— we can’t wait to see you there!!😊

We’re proud to showcase our new website for Missing Maps @themissingmaps and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) @doctorswithoutborders , where we led the full web development, redesign, and rebranding. 🗺️ Missing Maps is an open, collaborative project where volunteers map vulnerable areas to support humanitarian organizations in disaster- and crisis-prone regions. The redesign refreshes the brand with a vibrant palette and bespoke iconography while improving clarity and engagement through a static-first, database-free architecture. Built with Jekyll and hosted on GitHub Pages, the site utilizes structured Markdown and YAML in a „content-as-files“ model, with every update managed through a transparent, Git-based workflow. Automated CI/CD via GitHub Actions replaces slow server-side rendering, while Decap CMS provides an intuitive editorial interface. Custom API integrations add dynamic functionality without compromising security or maintainability. By combining thoughtful design with resilient, open-source infrastructure, the website is as dependable and collaborative as the humanitarian work it supports.

Last week, MSF Ireland facilitated a hugely successful Missing Maps event between Maynooth University and Trinity College Dublin. 🗺️ 45 participants spent over four hours mapping in Ouaddaï Province, Chad. The groups were able to map over 5,300 buildings in the region. 🌍 These contributions enable us to develop detailed, open-source maps that enable MSF, and other organisations on the ground, to provide faster access to healthcare. MSF provides medical care and assistance to displaced people and local communities in Chad. Our primary activities include vaccination campaigns against measles and diphtheria, as well as emergency medical response for Sudanese refugees. Your efforts are already helping teams plan and deliver assistance more effectively. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed!👏 @themissingmaps @maynoothgeography @maynoothuni @trinitygeography @trinitycollegedublin #MSF #MSFIreland #MissingMaps

⭐ Missing maps event in partnership with Trinity College Dublin and Maynooth University ⭐ We invite you to participate in our upcoming 'mapathon' between MSF Ireland, @trinitycollegedublin and @maynoothuni on January 12th, 2026. Missing Maps is an ongoing, collaborative project between Médecins Sans Frontières, the American Red Cross, British Red Cross and Humanitarian OpenStreetMap. Missing Maps 'mapathons' are events in which you can help to map areas where humanitarian organisations are trying to meet the needs of people who live at risk of disasters and crises. The mapping conducted during this event will be checked by GIS experts as well as local staff on the ground, providing detailed maps for the region. Missing Maps is being run through On Monday, we will be mapping Ouaddai Province, Chad. Ouaddai Province is in the south-east of Chad. In 2023, MSF launched a large-scale emergency response in the area to support the massive numbers of refugees fleeing the conflict in neighbouring Sudan. You do not need to have any GIS or previous mapping experience, as full training will be provided on the day. The event is hybrid, with attendance available online or in person at Trinity College. The event begins at 11am. You will hear about the Missing Maps project and receive training for the mapping, while also hearing a testimony from MSF colleague Orla Sheridan, who has worked directly in our field projects and seen first-hand the impact of events such as these. 💻 To join this event remotely, click the link in our bio and find the first link displayed on our linktree. 🌍 Everyone attending on the day will need to create an account on the mapping website to use the software. It would be ideal if everyone could do this prior to the event. The website used for the mapping is the 2nd link in out linktree (link in bio) and the ‘sign up’ page can be found in the upper right hand of this page. We hope to see you there! #MSF #MSFIreland #MissingMaps #TrinityCollegeDublin #MaynoothUniversity
