Maynooth University welcomed Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD to officially open Teach Uí Bhuachalla Student Accommodation, its new purpose-built student housing in the heart of Maynooth town. Located on Leinster Street, the 4,000m² complex spans four floors and provides 116 self-contained, en-suite student rooms, supported by communal kitchens designed for social cooking and dining. This state-of-the-art development is the first project to be delivered under the Government’s Short-Term Activation Programme to help with the supply of student accommodation. The building includes seven accessible rooms, is heated by heat pumps and has a BER cert rating of A2. It brings the total number of student beds available at Maynooth University to 1,262 from 1,146. Designed by Demesne Architects and delivered by Vision Contracting, the project strengthens the connection between the University and the wider community. It is situated in the middle of Maynooth town on the historic site of the original Buckley House — a detached, three-bay, two-storey residence dating back to the early 1800s. Minister James Lawless, who will officially open the new housing, said: “This is a proud day for our sector. The delivery of Teach Uí Bhuachalla is not just a milestone for Maynooth University, it marks a significant step forward in how we deliver student housing across Ireland. MU Chamber Choir features on new Dermot Kennedy album 🙌 The @mu_chamberchoir features on seven tracks of Dermot Kennedy’s newly released album The Weight of the Woods, following a collaboration between the Irish musician and the choir earlier this year. The album recently reached number one in both Ireland and the UK, making Kennedy the first Irish solo artist to top the UK charts with his first three studio albums. The record also reached number six in the United States. Kennedy, who graduated from MU with a Bachelor of Music (BMus) in 2012, invited the choir to take part in the recording process in January 2025. The project also reunited him with MU Chamber Choir Artistic Director Dr Michael T. Dawson, who studied at MU at the same time as the musician. #DermotKennedy #MUChamberChoir #TheWeightOfTheWoods #MaynoothUniversity #ChoirMusic

MU celebrates 5th anniversary of Arts and Minds 🎭 The annual Maynooth University Arts and Minds Festival returns and will take place from May 7 - 9, Thursday to Saturday. The popular festival of arts and culture, now in its fifth year will feature music, literary, Irish-language, community, and family-friendly events across the campus and Maynooth town. The festival has become a much-anticipated event that is designed to open the university’s doors to the public and showcase the strength of the arts in North Kildare. Conceived by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities to highlight the intellectual and creative importance of the arts in enriching community lives and wellbeing, the festival has at its heart the academic dimension central to MU’s mission. It began as a small, alumni-focused gathering, but has grown into something much bigger; a three-day festival attracting families, students, alumni and visitors from across Ireland, with the number of ‘sold out’ events growing each year. The programme for 2026 is the most ambitious yet, with events running from morning to evening and an emphasis on engagement, well-being and community outreach. A major draw this year will be The Blindboy Live Podcast Show on Saturday afternoon, bringing one of Ireland’s best-known podcasters to town for a wide-ranging conversation expected to explore mental health, happiness, and everyday life. “I knew from the moment I heard his first song that his voice was something special. He sang from his soul, and I play drums from mine. From that moment, I allowed myself to dream… and that dream came true.” Alum Micheál Quinn (2012 BMus) recalls the impact of hearing his then classmate, and now globally famous Irish singer and songwriter Dermot Kennedy, perform one of his own songs. As fellow grad Dermot Kennedy’s drummer, a founding member of Meltybrains?, and a musician in many other successful bands, Micheál has turned instinct and creativity into sold-out stages and a thriving music career.
