A week of growth, teamwork, and new experiences with YAW Cohort 9. Pushed past comfort zones, built stronger connections, and learned lessons that will stick far beyond this moment. Can’t wait for what’s next.

Today’s the day! Following years of relentless effort by @saveelephanthill @mrcaparks and countless other orgs (including the @californianativeplantsociety and @test_plot !), the first official, graded, and accessible trail will be OPEN for community access. This reflects an enormous victory of environmental justice, community activism, and native plant restoration and education work. Join us in celebrating this momentous occasion!

What is Elephant Hill Test Plot? LA-32 took a visit recently to the site of our Garden of the Month recipient to find out more of what happens and how we all can get involved in land stewardship. William Hourigan, one of the leads at Elephant Hill Test Plot walked us through the history and goals of the space, and how the organization is working with the community to help invite nature into our lives and neighborhood. Nestled at the end of Lathrop St. in El Sereno, the space is always free and open to the public. Need a staycation with sun, flora, and fauna? Take a little walk up the hill and enjoy the views and the smells of spring. Need a little physical activity? Show up to a volunteer day and get busy pulling weeds and trimming plants. Want a place for the kids? Wander in the sunflowers and show them the magic of butterflies frolicing in the flowers. If you know any exceptional gardens in LA-32 - nominate them for Garden of the Month. It is easy - visit bit.ly/4kpdhiK and fill out the form. We look forward to hearing your ideas for future uses and designs as we hope to acquire additional open space parcels for habitat restoration and nature-based solutions for stormwater runoff. See you Saturday! #ElephantHill #NELA #NortheastLA #DiscoverLA

i love this earth i want every child and adult to be able to swim in creeks, put their feet in the mud, pick and taste honey clovers, scream in delight as cold water splashes them - maybe from a kayak paddle or just as they submerge in a lake, river or ocean. i want everyone to be able to hike to the top of a mountain, look out at a wide vista and breath in deep fresh air - being reminded of how small we are in the vast expanse of the universe. i want to be able to lay in grass with my besties and their besties for the rest of my life. we have the solutions to protect this place, to protect a relationship of mutual benefit and kinship with our planet and all its inhabitants, to assure that we can all access clean air, clean water and green spaces. on this earth day, i hope you’re able to stare up into the canopy of a tree and take a deep breath. i then implore you to begin to seek one way you can be involved with and deepen your relationship with the nature near your home. this is in fact being part of the solution of how we make this home planet a more livable one for ourselves, our children and the next seven generations. it could be “small” or “big,” it all matters: * learning to compost * volunteering at a local farm * committing to shopping once a month at a farmer’s market * planting milkweed in an empty plot in the sidewalk * starting a pollinator garden * advocating for more tree coverage in your neighborhood * committing to biking or walking more on small, close errands * making your new vehicle an electric vehicle * solarizing your home * eating less meat * eating more leftovers to reduce food waste * carrying your own water bottle and coffee mug daily * joining a local beach or park clean up * donating to an organization like The Wilderness Society or Hike Clerb * getting yourself and your people outside more, so we can fall in love with our planet again and again, together happy earth day good people, let’s love this planet enough to advocate for it.
