🌿📰 🚨 NEW ARTICLE ALERT! 🚨✨🍃 Another great story highlighting Elephant Hill and the long-awaited opening of its new trail! 💚🌄 👉 Link in bio to read the full article! Many thanks to Fiona Ng and her great promo of the Elephant Hill Trail Opening on May 2nd in @laistofficial today. We love Fiona’s coverage because she is able to convey so much in a succinct and compelling manner that goes beyond the ‘who, what, when and where’ of a story. Thank you Fiona and @laistofficial ! 🙌🏽💫 Years in the making, this new 0.75-mile trail 🥾 now connects one side of Elephant Hill to the other — from Pullman & Harriman all the way to Lathrop Street — creating a safer, more accessible way to experience this 110-acre natural treasure in El Sereno. 🌿 This milestone represents decades of community advocacy 💪🏽🌱 to protect Elephant Hill from illegal dumping, off-roading, and development — and to preserve it as open space for future generations. With support from @mrcaparks , new trail features like signage, kiosks, and restoration efforts (including the @test_plot 🌼) give a glimpse into what a fully restored Elephant Hill can become. As shared in the article, this isn’t just the completion of a trail — it’s the beginning of what’s next. ✨ #SaveElephantHill #ElSereno #NortheastLA #LAist #UrbanNature #CommunityPower #ProtectOurParks 🌿🥾🌄

This Saturday, we opened the Elephant Hill Trail in El Sereno. This was more than a ribbon cutting - it was a declaration that our communities deserve access to nature, clean air, and open spaces. For too long, neighborhoods like El Sereno have been overlooked for park access. This weekend, we affirmed that park equity is essential. This trail is the result of community organizing led by Save Elephant Hill in collaboration with MRCA and Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Let’s talk with our neighbors, listen to our communities, invest in equity, and protect our environment. When we do that, we all rise together.

🐜🐜🐜 ARGENTINE ANT IN NORTHEAST LOS ANGELES Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) are small, brownish-gray ants found all over the world. Native to South America, their range has expanded due to human activities, and they are now the most commonly encountered ant in Los Angeles. They can thrive in moist, human-modified landscapes, and outcompete some of our native ant species, which are key parts of local ecosystems. Argentine ants are especially interesting because unlike other ant species which fight when members of different nests encounter one another, Argentine ants from as far apart as Los Angeles and San Francisco get along just fine! This means that they form what are called supercolonies, and might help explain their tremendous success in their introduced range.

🕸️ CALIFORNIA TRAPDOOR SPIDERS (Bothriocyrthum californicus) are members of the group Mygalomorphae which includes tarantulas and kin, they are native to Southern California and Baja California, Mexico. 📏Their size ranges from 1 to 2 inches. They dig burrows in the ground which are covered with silk, they seal the burrow entrance with a little trapdoor created from silk and saliva, they feed usually from small arthropods like crickets and beetles. 🌿Females spend their whole life in the burrows, while males leave in search of females once their reach maturity, females can live multiple years and are among the most longevous spiders in the world, they are quite common in the foothills of the LA mountains, pay close attention and look for their doors which are usually the size of a quarter coin.
