In a whirlwind week of outdoor activities, high school youth participating in How to Camp & TEK learn new skills like 10 Essentials, Leave Not Trace principles, building a tent and flora and fauna identification, and fire stories. As a wellness practice, they natural-dye bandanas using tumeric, collected and pressed plants, and used cyanotype paint to blend plant motifs on their multi-layered art project. Shout out to Josh Andujo and Thanh Mai Berger for their support and guidance through the week. This program is funded by Prop 64 Youth Community Access Grant. #OutdoorEquity #AccessForAll

A new trail is now open in Northeast LA!
The newly built hiking trail at Elephant Hill Open Space connects neighborhoods in El Sereno, extending 0.75 miles between Pullman and Lathrop Street with zig zagging switchbacks leading up the hill, welcoming the community to enjoy nature in their big backyard!
It’s grand opening on May 2nd, with community partners, elected officials, and community members were present to celebrate this unique public natural area!
This project was completed by the MRCA with funding support from Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District (RPOSD) and from the State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) grant program. Thanks to the Los Angeles Conservation Corps for their help constructing the trail with support from Bellfree Contractors.
We look forward to acquiring neighboring parcels to add to the existing 10 acres of public land. Read more about the project and opening, link in bio.

Slithering in for Wildlife Wednesday- various native wildlife reptiles spotted by members of our Restoration crew while tending to newly planted plots over the past few months.
We've heard of tragic and scary encounters with rattlesnakes throughout California this Spring.
However, not all that slithers is venomous!
The rattlesnake is the only venomous snake in the region, with an additional 13 non-venomous snakes, and all species provide an invaluable service to the ecosystem.
Snakes are both predator and prey- they help manage rodent populations and help keep hawks, bobcats, owls, and coyotes fed!
What snake species have you encountered while in the trail?
