Dig In! From the garden to the table Chef Juli showed us how it’s done! 🍓🫐 We chopped, we bruised some leaves, and the result? A fresh Berry Compote and a Hummingbird Sage Infused Agave that had everyone coming back for more! Check out our bio and download the recipes that we used that day! This is Get Out and Garden! A huge THANK YOU to @shiftourways for hosting our RUTH YouthBuild students yesterday! We had the best time learning about food sovereignty, regenerative agriculture, and all the incredible work their team is doing at their beautiful “backyard farms” located right in Reseda and Arleta! This field trip was a part of our Environmental Science and Green Careers class that we offer in partnership with @treepeople_org funded by @canaturalresourcesagency . 💚🌳 @shiftourways started out as a small mutual aid project back in 2020 and has since grown into a full backyard farm where they donate 100% of their harvest, four days a week, to community members who need it most. Everything they do is rooted in community care, intentionality, and a deep respect for the land that nurtures and nourishes us. Since launching, they’ve been able to: 🗑️ Divert 2,500 pounds of food waste 🥕 Grow & distribute 500 pounds of organic produce to the community 🍎 Hire 9 youth & community harvest interns Thank you again for showing us around the farm (and letting us feed your sweet chickens)!! Did you know?!? Chickens can actually doze lightly while standing! They have a neat trick called unihemispheric slow-wave sleep, where one half of the brain sleeps while the other stays alert for predators. One eye stays open (connected to the awake half), one eye closes. It’s basically a built-in security system. That said, for deep sleep they do need to perch and will fluff up, tuck their head back toward a wing, and fully zonk out. The standing doze is more of a light nap and you’ve probably seen your chickens get suspiciously still and glassy-eyed in a sunny spot in the afternoon. That’s them half-checked out 😂

Through art and sound, we open the circle 🌱 with muralist @insomniart (Erica Friend), the layered rhythms of @mountainsofmam , the breath of @xochipilli_spirit ’s flute, the voice and composition of @anaisazul , and an open mic guided by poet Anahi Samaniego ( @pusssyangel ) Brought to life by @vocesunidas_sfv , @aetnastreetsolidarity , & @shiftourways with sound and stage by @momoproductions999 It’s a night to soften, listen, & root yourself deeper into the land you call home.
