This gorgeous day would have been Joe Fama’s 78th birthday. He spent over half of those years doing work that he loved, rebuilding, restoring, and revitalizing neighborhoods and buildings in communities that he cared deeply for. TAP misses you, Joe.

There was record turnout at the Capitol for Lobby Day, and the speakers were awesome! We were there advocating to protect New York State funding for the Neighborhood Preservation Program (NPP). Administered by NYS Homes and Community Renewal (@nyshcr ), this program enables our broad range of work and helps keep our services affordable. Threats to this funding are real, and we appreciate everyone speaking out to maintain and expand these services.

This week, TAP lost a revered founder. Troy lost a solid citizen. The Yankees lost a huge fan. 100+ architects lost their mentor, and countless people lost a good friend. We are all profoundly sad to lose him and profoundly grateful for his presence in our lives. Joe died peacefully with Barbara by his side. The Famas with gather us in the Spring to commemorate his life. I’ll venture a guess that Joe would count his greatest achievements by the number of individuals who have healthy, safe, accessible, and affordable homes through TAP’s work. Following is a remembrance from board member Nancy Klepsch. The TAP board and staff, and the Fama family thank you for your kind wishes. —Barb Nelson I am so deeply sorry to hear of the loss of our beloved Joe Fama. I will never forget the first time I met Joe. He sat across the table from me during a review of the plans for 3254 Sixth Ave. He looked a lot like my cousin Lenny, was originally from Corona or Queens like my cousin Lenny, and he knew where the Lemon Ice King was. That meant the world to me, as I had no idea what I was doing approving plans for my own first home. Joe guided me to Beth, and she showed me how to select finishings. In fact, she told me what finishings were. I didn’t know. Before I was a board member, I was a client. Joe was more like a teacher to me. Barbara Fama, well that smile when I entered the door still warms my heart. Joe Fama taught me so much about buildings, community organizing, and walkable cities. He was pragmatic and funny. He was dedicated and smart. He gathered a community of professionals and supporters that still to this day cherish TAP, its mission and, most importantly, its staff. As I write this email, I can still hear his voice in my head and in my heart. And, yup, when you had a building issue in Troy (and there usually was one or 30), you called Joe. I am retired now and my knees ache from years of protesting, but I live in this beautiful building in the heart of this pretty city, in part, because a guy named Joe got it when I said Troy (kind of) looked Brooklyn, where I was born and I want to live here. . Our upcoming ARCHTOBER : ART BLOCK PARTY is packed with all kinds of exciting art and entertainment, especially on the music front. We have two acts lined up for the evening that are sure to get your blood flowing and your dance on! @architraveband is the genre-spanning synth-pop project of multi-media artist Jennifer Maher Coleman and bassist Paul Coleman (also of Haley Moley and Sinkcharmer). Informed by darkwave, 80’s new-wave, and sci-fi soundscapes, Architrave’s post-punk bass-lines and lush synths provide a landscape for themes of isolation, love, and dystopian unease. @groop_lab is is a collective of electronic dance music DJ’s and visual artists who want to support and nurture the creation of physical spaces for art, dancing, and fun. Attendees to a groop.lab event can expect to be taken on a journey that can have as many twists and turns as your body will make on the dance floor. Usually exhilarating, sometimes emotional, often times funny, groop.lab let’s their personalities shine in a reflexive conversation with their audience.The founding members of groop.lab, “denada” and “DJ Choddy”, wanted to regularly experience something that was not being offered in the Capital Region, a rich and full electronic music dance scene, with eclectic music and eccentric people. ART BLOCK PARTY Enjoy an evening celebrating experimental contemporary art and architecture in Collar Works’ future outdoor Art Yard space, featuring a performance by the architecture-inspired 80’s throwback band @architraveband , the FLOCKart exhibition by @eli_thorne , DJ vibes, and a dance set with @groop_lab The Art Yard will be transformed by Troy-based architectural firm @mestudiodesign , which has joined up with lighting designer @lightexture to create a sculptural installation for the event.
