World Premier of NO! Composer: @chayaczernowin7 Conductors: @daniel.bjarnason @luis.castillobriceno Singers: @lisel.jpeg and me Orchestra: @laphil A Statement from the Composer: NO! originated in 2017/8 when the Trump administration forcibly separated babies and children from their mothers. This became for me a constant visceral pain. I am a mother. I am a human being. I had to say NO! in my work. In the years since, this pain has only expanded. Screaming NO! has become increasingly urgent—against Israel’s US-funded crimes against humanity in Gaza and the West Bank, its abandonment of our own Israeli hostages, the mass imprisonment of Palestinian children, and, here in the US, the abduction of immigrants, students, and protesters. Families are torn apart as rulers scapegoat the vulnerable for power and profit. We are all children, many of us are mothers. Can we remember this? NO! is an antiphonal call that happens inside a body. The two orchestras, each with its own singer, are like two limbs of the same mental being—working together toward the scream. The piece is about rage. A rage that gathers and slowly, relentlessly, struggles to come to the surface. It starts deep inside the body and pushes outward—antiphonally—as if the scream is a creature made of pain, using its limbs to swim upward, from the caves of the body into the open air. Only at the very end do the words emerge: Don’t take my child away Don’t take my child Don’t No —Chaya czernowin pictures by :Jon Hepfer

Possible to listen to the world premier of my first Symphony Orchestra piece “The Murals in Quinta del Sordo” commissioned by London Contemporary Music Festival @lcmf__ tonight at BBC’s New music show. Will be available 28 Dec-Jan 28 2025. Performed by London Contemporary Music Orchestra conducted by Jack Sheen @jackfrsheen World Premier 13/12 2024 Broadcasted by BBC New Music Show 28 Dec - 29 Dec 2025 “The composition is divided in 14 segments, sonic tableaus that bounces off Francisco Goya’s works, “The Black Paintings”. In the beginning and end “tableau vivant” is used as a means to emphasize the connection with the paintings adding a pinch of satire so strongly connected with Francisco Goya. The order in which they appear has been determined following the way the murals were painted on the walls in his house. In the score each part has a subtitle referencing an earlier work of music using the exact same title as the mural. […]”

From the world premier of my first Symphony Orchestra piece “The Murals in Quinta del Sordo” commissioned by London Contemporary Music Festival @lcmf__ Performed by London Contemporary Music Orchestra conducted by Jack Sheen @jackfrshee 13/12 2024 “[…] Questions that have been in motion during the creation of this piece touches authorship, referencing, sociology and history. In literature and visual art there is a long tradition of referencing other people’s work. In music there is a bizarre protectionism that often is unreasonable. Supposedly it has to do with the invention of copyright? That in itself is a good thing. In our time the idea of copyright is very much in motion as it’s continually violated by big tech companies. And maybe it’s time to reevaluate the concept ones more and narrow it down to its core? Did Verdi invent the G-minor chord, the first bars in his Requiem, Dies Irae? Did Berlioz invent the “Dies Irae” melody that he uses in "Songe d'une nuit du sabbat", in Symphony Fantastique, clearly not.[…]” Photo: @dawid.laskowski.photography

It’s very difficult to prove whom invented what but it’s much more easy to hear who was an artist or not. One can never copy or steal from a real artist and achieve art. If that wasn’t the case it would be very easy to make art. Humans are connected, no one creates anything in a vacuum. Everything is in dialogue with the past, present and future, especially art. The choice of Francisco Goya was natural because he was a humanist and a truly empathetic visual artist who understood the human condition inside out and was able to show how we are connected. His art is about yesterday, today and tomorrow, just like art should be right?” Photo: @dawid.laskowski.photography Last picture is of a painting by Francisco Goya “Men fighting with cudgels”
