In the Winter 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 (OUT NOW), the SOC brings you multimedia stories that shine a light on camera operators of both film and television. ⁣ ⁣ For our features, Camera Operator spoke with A camera operator @Gilles.Corbeil , SOC, and Steadicam operator James Frater, SOC (steadicam_uk), to learn more about what it was like working with Guillermo del Toro to bring his passion project—Frankenstein—to life, from the massive practical builds that had to accommodate cranes to camera work that ethereally glides through the compositions.⁣ To learn more about the massive combined production for the Wicked films, Camera Operator spoke with A camera and Steadicam operator @KarstenJacobsen and B camera operator Simon Finney. They told not only of the huge scale of the shoot, but also the more intimate moments of spontaneity, reacting to the performances of stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. ⁣ For the technically complex shoots involving stunt driving and simulated fire, The Lost Bus required quite a bit of collaboration between the first and second unit camera teams, with both units frequently working together to cover the same sequences. In this multimedia feature, 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 assembled a panel of talent from both camera teams, including first unit A camera operator @GeorgeBillinger , SOC; first unit C camera operator Kevin Emmons, SOC (@kevincolorado ); second unit B camera operator Kent Harvey, SOC (@khfilms ); second unit C camera operators Juergen Heinemann, SOC (@juergen73 ), and Corey Weintraub (cdubcamera); and director of photography @PalUlvikRokseth .⁣ Though not a musical in the traditional sense, music is still a driving force in Song Sung Blue, as are the pair of powerhouse performances by the film’s stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. To learn more about what went into shooting this film, Camera Operator reached out to A camera and Steadicam operator @DaveThompsonSOC .⁣ ⁣ And watch SOC Active members sharing personal insights into camera operating, tips learned during their careers, and stories from the set in ITS: Insights, Tips & Stories. ⁣ ⁣ Cover photo by Sarah Shatz/Focus Features⁣ ⁣ READ at ((link in bio))⁣

Celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Connie Huang (Associate Member) is a DP/Operator based in Brooklyn, NY. @conartistdp / @conartisth ⁣ ⁣ “I began my career as a PA, gradually finding my way up through the camera department. I owe so much of where I am today to the⁣ generosity, mentorship, and guidance of the many crew members and filmmakers who took the time to share their knowledge with me. I’m deeply grateful to those who invited me into the creative process, even when it extended beyond my role, whether that meant doing the zoom or operating the third axis.⁣ ⁣ One of my most meaningful memories is working alongside Rick Marroquin, one of NYC’s premier dolly grips. When I was an AC, He would walk me through the mechanics of complex crane shots and answer every question I had. We often spoke about the day we’d collaborate as operator and dolly grip, and he’d always remind me (half-jokingly) how⁣ little time I had before he retired.⁣ ⁣ Just before he did, I brought him onto a commercial I was shooting. Right before our first shot together, he leaned over the dolly and said, “Con, our first dolly move.” It was a full-circle moment I’ll never forget.⁣ ⁣ There have been so many people like Rick who have encouraged me, challenged me, and believed in me along the way. These relationships are what make this work truly meaningful. To step onto a set and be⁣ surrounded by a supportive, trusted team, that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”⁣ ⁣ Photo 1 - Dayplaying - @ryantoussieng ⁣ Photo 2 - Imaginary Friends - Dir. HOOK DP @santiago_g3 needed some lowww running shots for @nicholasmanuelpino ’s soccer movie. The whole show was handheld, and we didn’t want these shots to stand out as anything different. We played with a few gimbal “weedwhacker” rigs, but ultimately realized simpler was better! Since then, the HOOK has really gotten around - friends have been taking it to some cool places to do very cool things!

Celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month: @JaniceMin , SOC ⁣ “As an Asian American raised by tiger parents, I was told I could be one of three things: a doctor, a lawyer, or President of the US. I decided not to be President and followed the medical path, volunteering and working in hospitals, shelters, and a veterans’ psychiatric ward. In places of illness, trauma, and loss, one encounters multitudes of stories and histories that beg to be told. In quiet lulls and intermittent chaos alike, I found myself drawn to those stories —often overlooked, yet deeply human and fascinating. ⁣ ⁣ That instinct has guided my work: to do justice to a person, place, or time, whether real or imagined. Camera operating feels, humbly speaking, like both a responsibility and gift to the world. Growing up Asian American in Alabama, surrounded by people who looked nothing like me, film became both a base to find connection and escape. ⁣ ⁣ At Johns Hopkins, I was asked if I had seen Goodfellas, and to me, the Copacabana steadicam shot, with its choreography and energy, demonstrated how visual language can define character and emotion. Along with the lush intimacy of In the Mood for Love and the stark 18 minute opening of There Will Be Blood, that moment solidified my desire to become a storyteller.⁣ ⁣ To create work that resonates in that way—and to offer something meaningful for future Asian American operators to see as roles they can occupy themselves is a worthy mission for me.”⁣ ⁣ 1.
