In honor of Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s historic win for SINNERS, we’re shining a light on Rachel Morrison—the first woman ever nominated for Best Cinematography. A true trailblazer behind the camera, Morrison is an unflinching artist who built her career through collaboration, including her work on BLACK PANTHER with Oscar-winning director Ryan Coogler—making history as the first woman to lens a Marvel superhero film. Check out Rachel’s full session, NAVIGATING A CAREER AS A CINEMATOGRAPHER, on Sundance Collab. #women #film #cinematography #Oscars #Sinners

I met Mike Baumann when he gaffed for me on additional photography for FIFTY SHADES OF GRAY 3. We were shooting inserts of butt plugs (the best lit butt plugs you’ll ever see) and dreaming of better days. Autumn and I have known each other for over a decade and spent YEARS shooting tiny movies, watching our male counterparts get offered huge studio films while we were consistently overlooked. And then legend Ryan Coogler came along and changed everything. Anyhow whatever happens tomorrow, this photo is proof that WITH PERSISTENCE and PATIENCE, DREAMS DO COME TRUE. It is possible to go from B Roll of Butt Plugs and a cloak of invisibility to Oscar nominations all around! Love you both dearly @addp and @baumanlights and so inspired by both of your beautiful work! @sinnersmovie @onebattleafteranothermovie

That’s a WRAP on LOVE OF YOUR LIFE! Three countries, five cities and countless friends later, I am a changed human for all I have met and experienced. The title is a double entendre - referring to the vulnerability and risk it takes in order to truly feel and to fall in love with one’s own life. We have done that in spades. Blood, sweat, tears, and so very much laughter and love. I am really proud of all we have accomplished but even more proud of the friendships that were forged and the memories made. Off to the edit with a full heart!

LOYL Photo Dump #1. Realizing how few pictures I take while filming. But the UK chapter of the shoot has flown by. I have enjoyed every minute with this incredible cast and crew. 10-hour-work-days are fast and furious but you get to have a meal and collect your thoughts at wrap. Maybe even catch an Arsenal match with @pelsworld . Grateful during these trying times to be able to do the work I love with people I love even more.

#Director Rachel Morrison ASC (@rmorrison ) and #DOP Rina Yang BSC (@the_rinayang ) take us #behindthescenes of @thefireinsidemovie . "It was a decision to prioritize being with our subjects and having it feel very subjective. Our general default was to go wider and closer, maintaining a close eyeline. A punch is always going to feel more dynamic if it's coming straight at camera than a profile shot. Sometimes you need profile shots for context, but we stayed as close as we could to Claressa's eyeline, and I think that helped it feel like you're in the ring with her. You feel two people connecting, as opposed to a camera looking at somebody from a cool angle, because that sometimes makes you feel removed." Rachel Morrison, ASC discusses her visual approach for her feature directorial debut, The Fire Inside. “We talked about using more Steadicam in one fight, and more handheld for another, we can be inside the ring for one scene and outside the ring for another scene. Rachel had the director's cap on, and she did a phenomenal job without micromanaging the cinematography. She trusted me to do my job, and we could have open discussions. For me, the process is more important than the end product. Of course, we want the film to be good, but it's so important that we have good vibes, good people on set.” Cinematographer Rina Yang, BSC reflects on her collaboration with director — and veteran cinematographer — Rachel Morrison, ASC on The Fire Inside. 📸 BTS Photo credit: Sabrina Lantos

“Because of how we felt the film should be shot, in particular the fights, it felt like we would benefit a lot from the Rialto.” Rina Yang BSC on her choice of gear when shooting The Fire Inside with a Venice II.

Last chance to see THE FIRE INSIDE in theaters! At its core this film is the story of resilience. Of getting knocked down and finding the strength to get back up. Seems like something we could all use a good dose of right now. I promise you will leave the theater fists in the air, reenergized and ready to tackle the world.
