Tremendous honor to frame and compose the camera working alongside DP Jeff Cutter and the wonderfully talented Dan Trachtenberg directing this epic new installment. Predator Badlands Great thrill to see it in IMAX at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
DP Adam Newport-Berra and Camera Operator Mark Goellnicht SOC ACO are the powerhouse duo behind the lens of The Studio.
In this episode, we dive into what it’s really like working with comedy legends and co-directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Adam and Mark take us through the camera rigs they tested and how they meticulously choreographed scenes that feel like total chaos but are actually tightly crafted.
We also break down some of the most jaw dropping shots in the series, the kind that had us hitting rewind just to figure out how they pulled them off.
If you’re into behind the scenes tech talk, creative teamwork, or just love hearing how high pressure shots come together, this one’s for you. From camera movement to controlled madness, it’s a must listen for both the tech heads and fans of the show.

At once a biting satire of the movie business and a love letter to the movies themselves, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘰 juggles both the Herculean effort that goes into trying to get anything made in Hollywood with the absurdity of the egos of people calling the shots.
To discuss the series, 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 had the opportunity to talk with both A camera/Steadicam operator Mark Goellnicht, SOC (@gollymark ), as well as A camera dolly grip Chris Thrasher (@thrasher30019 ) about their work. From the series’ frequent use of long takes—including an entire episode presented as a single oner—to adapting the various visual styles of the fictional films being made within the show, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘰 demanded a lot of its camera team. In this feature we get to dig into what was involved in bringing all of that to the screen.

In the Spring 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 ((OUT NOW)), the Society of Camera Operators brings you multimedia stories that shine a light on camera operators of both film and television.
The issue begins with an In Memoriam for our dear friend, Walter Klassen. Matthew Moriarity, SOC, and Larry McConkey, SOC, share their memories of Walter and his many contributions to our field.
In our feature stories, Camera Operator had the chance to speak with A camera and Steadicam operator Xavier Thompson and B camera operators Brigman Foster Owens and Amber Bournett-McLain about working on the series Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, from adapting to its 1970s “Blaxploitation” aesthetic and sharing intimate moments with the show’s star-studded cast to being given the creative liberty to find the right shot in the moment.
For our feature on The Studio, Camera Operator presents a video conversation with A camera/Steadicam operator Mark Goellnicht, SOC, as well as a Q&A with A camera dolly grip Chris Thrasher about their work on the series and the challenges and rewards for its camera team.
In Operating for Operators, we focus on three of the dozens of people who contribute their talents to the SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards—camera operators Gene Huelsman, David Levisohn and Chris Metcalf—to learn a little bit more about their work as operators and what it’s like working an event surrounded by their peers.
Again this year, the SOC was an integral part of the NAB Show’s CineCentral. This issue features a photo spread of the many workshops presented at the conference by the SOC Education Committee.
In Insight, we meet SOC Members Christian Adkins II, SOC, and Angelica Perez-Castro, SOC, and you can watch video excerpts from SOC Active members sharing personal insights into camera operating, tips learned during their careers, and stories from the set in ITS: Insights, Tips & Stories.

#TheStudio’s co-creator/star @sethrogen says Local 600 Director of Photography @adamnewportberra was “someone whose work we were big fans of and who had a lot of experience doing prolonged takes.” This dovetailed nicely with Rogen and co-creator @evandgoldberg wanting to shoot the show as a series of “oners” – in essence, the opening of Robert Altman’s classic Hollywood satire, “The Player,” on steroids.
