Informational video: How to safely roll across highlines without a leash!
Rolling across highlines with just a personal anchor system (PAS) doesnβt seem to be as common these days, but it can still be an important skill.
Huge caveat to this video: if you can, always use a leash when accessing a highline! Do everything you can to make sure leashes are available for all people who may have to roll across (such as after rigging or to do a rescue).
Key Takeaways:
- Always have at least one secure (locked) point when on a highline. This means please stop unclipping your PAS to pass a connection if your only other point is a non-locking roller!
- Auto-locking carabiners > screw gate carabiners
- 2 PAS are better than 1!
- It is best practice to have your attachment points opposite and opposing (both upright with gates facing opposite directions), and especially important if they are screw gates and not auto-lockers
- Rollexβs and Hangovers are EN 12275 certified (like life-supporting carabiners) and BC Rollers are not, with a specific warning on the website that they are not certified as PPE (although they have a similar MBS, so use your own judgement)
- In this video when I am showing what NOT to do, please note that I have a second PAS clipped to the anchor
Thank you so much to @visualslips for collaborating on these videos! And to the local highliners who are letting me take a few hours on their permarigs to film. Weβre having a ton of fun doing them, if you have any other topics youβd like to see us cover, drop them in the comments!
Of the many competitions taking place, Chattanooga River Games will be hosting both a Highline Freestyle Challenge and Speedline Challenge! The Chattanooga River Games is the Southβs largest extreme sports festival β a high-energy, family-friendly celebration of outdoor culture in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. From August 15β17, experience a free, three-day festival.
Competition details can be found through the Chattanooga River Games Website -> Highlining -> Apply to Compete. All slackers able to stand on a highline are encouraged to enter!
