A 1 km speedline competition will expose everything you skipped in training.
This was my first race in China and the longest highline in all of Asia. A 1.4 km line with a 1 km race section set aggressively off level. Starting from an iconic freestanding rock tower roughly 50 meters below the home side anchor viewing deck, the race began on a flat fast section more than 300 meters into the line, putting the finish right in front of the cameras.
The line was rigged entirely on @slk_slacklines_official high tech webbing called Avatar, named after the floating landscapes this area inspired. The home side was accessed by gondola, making the only real ascent happen out on the line.
The final 200 to 300 meters were steep enough that my blue shoe started sliding and every step pulled me downhill. Rubber soles next time. That section was not just hard, it was unforgiving. There were minor injuries on that section. One athlete tried to stop a slide with his hands and tore them open. Another caught the line higher than anyone would ever recommend and ended up in the emergency room with swelling and discoloration. Lessons were learned. Even a judge whipped near the end and slid back an entire connection. A clear reminder of how quickly a line can go from runnable to hostile, and why grippier webbing like @balancecommunity MK5 matters on steep sections at this scale.
I arrived mid August after working in Alaska over the summer and breaking my hand in May, which meant my speed training was far from ideal. After three days of travel I got sick and struggled to eat when I needed energy most. I finished the race with oodles of falls, a slower time than expected, and noodles in my future.

This has been the longest stretch I’ve gone without freestyling in years. I broke my hand back in May and haven’t been able to train or film much since.
Hopefully this is enough to make the cut… otherwise, I guess I’ll start making other Thanksgiving plans 🦃😅
Best trick in the first clip, followed by my combo—unless the rules require 3 bounces after the combo, in which case that would be the third clip.
Missing the simple things: leash climbs, shoulder rolls, and a little chaos on the line. I just wanna roll around in the air again like a happy little gremlin again. ✌️

Turns out, learning this trick is 60% falling, 40% screaming, and 100% worth it. After way too many attempts, I *finally* landed my first Vader! And of course, from shoulder whilst dripping in my favorite highline fit! Give it a try! I definitely found it easier than going from rocket to Darth Vader.
