How to create a maquette for the set of a musical 🎭✨
Our Set Design student @riggy_tony shows you the process behind building a scaled model for a production of Grease: starting from the concept, developing the structure, and refining every detail along the way 👀
This is how his project came to life — step by step, turning an initial idea into a fully developed maquette that captures the visual identity of the musical.
The final result? A detailed miniature designed to translate atmosphere, space, and character into three dimensions.

Ever heard a costume come to life on set?
Fabric slides under the sewing machine, thread pulling tight, stitch after stitch. Hands work slowly, fixing every detail.
Then everything comes together with the final touches and last adjustments. And suddenly: the curtain rises and a scene comes to life
No music. Just pure set design coming to life, ASMR-style!

Taking on “Il Casanova di Federico Fellini” and reimagining its costumes from scratch? Properly ambitious — and our students absolutely delivered!
As part of a BA in Set Design project, NABA students reconstructed a scene from the iconic Fellini film, with the Costume, Make-up and Directing specialisations working side by side from first research note to final shot.
As one of the students explains in this unmissable interview, the costume work meant diving deep into 18th-century Rococo aesthetics — ornate, layered, and seriously technical.
Every piece was built from scratch, with lecturer Eva Marchetti pushing students to experiment with materials and construction techniques and find their own take on it.
The outcome? The kind of project you need to see.

What does Set Design look like when it goes global?
At the Winter Games Opening Ceremony, NABA Alumni and students, each from a different part of the world, teamed up with @balichwonderstudio , the Milan-based creative force behind some of the biggest live ceremonies on the planet.
They moved as one crew across props, costumes, scenography and live direction — handling real materials and keeping a show this huge running flawlessly together.
A full-on next-level leap from Academy to international scale, proving that Set Design doesn’t stop at traditional stages. Sometimes it throws you straight into the biggest productions on the planet.
So how do you actually make that jump? They spill it all in this interview!

Reworking a cinematic legend is no small move and our BA in Set Design students went all in!
For this curricular challenge, they went straight into “Il Casanova di Federico Fellini”, stepping inside the theatrical visual world of one of Italian cinema’s most iconic directors and rebuilding a scene through a tight collab across the BA in Set Design specialisations: Make-up, Costume and Directing.
From first ideas to final takes, they built everything themselves: costumes cut and constructed from scratch, ageing transformations crafted through detailed special effects make-up, direction shaped around space, light and movement.
Scenography drove the composition, pushing the relationship between body and environment right to the centre of the frame.
This is Set Design at NABA — collaborative, immersive and fully hands-on from start to finish!

Set design, turned into a Subsonica live concert experience!
“From Blurry to Stage” is the NABA workshop that redefined what set design can look like today. During Matter of Identity 2025, students jumped into a real brief, exploring how set design goes beyond classic stage formats and becomes a powerful visual language for live concerts and large-scale events.
Led by Jordan Babev, NABA lecturer and co-founder of Blearred Milano, the two-day workshop threw participants straight into an industry-style workflow. Starting from an existing stage designed by Blearred Milano, students reworked five original visual concepts for an upcoming Subsonica concert.
Lights, screens, projections, text and space synced up to build immersive visuals that hype both the performance and the crowd.
New tools, unfamiliar software, quick decisions — the outcome? Bold ideas and a very current take on set design!

A transformation in the making ✨
This timelapse captures the special effects make-up process that turns youth into age, revealing the power of detail, patience, and storytelling through skin.
Developed by the 2nd and 3rd year of the BA in Set Design, the project reinterprets the movie “Il Casanova” by Federico Fellini through a multidisciplinary collaboration across make-up, directing, scene and prop creation, and costume design, under the guidance of Donatella Mondani, Giacomo Andrico, Anna Fumagalli, and Eva Marchetti.
Stay tuned — this is just one step of the journey! 🎭
