What a wonderful weekend in Paris for ISE! We attended the fascinating panel ā€œMonter l’intimeā€ (editing intimacy), where directors and editors from three films shared how they approached deeply personal and family stories and how cinema can move beyond the private to touch something universal. Ɩzcan Vardar, first chair of Tempo, gave a thank-you on behalf of Tempo, one of the festival’s sponsors. We also had the chance to chat with LMA board members and festival organisers, exchanging stories about work and working conditions. It’s always enlightening to discover both the differences and the similarities across countries. A lovely moment was meeting Jean-FranƧois, the translator of ā€œIn Timeā€. LMA arranged the French subtitles for the screening, created with great care by Jean-FranƧois, who has lived and travelled in Ireland. His association, ATAA (the audiovisual translators’ association), highlighted the importance of ā€œhuman intelligenceā€ in translation. We attended the screening of ā€œIn Timeā€ — a beautiful, poetic and moving film about Dónal Lunny, described by a young French editor as ā€œa love letter to music.ā€ It deeply resonated with the audience. During the Q&A, Hugh Chaloner spoke about the editing process, offering valuable insights into the film. Later, invited ISE members took to the stage to share the origins of ISE and the work we do. A huge thank you to LMA for the warm welcome and inspiring exchanges šŸ’š @monteurs_associes @tempo_filmeditors @southwindblows @screenguilds @hugh00 @eoinmcdon @shane_woz_ere @jackieajarvis @sarahmcteigue @mathildemuyard @julie_dupre_off @vardarozcan

Our Access All Areas day is the first-ever national student screen event bringing together more than 600 students and staff from across the country for a milestone moment in Ireland’s creative community. Panels across animation, scripted and unscripted opened honest conversations about craft, careers and the realities of working in the industry. Students also got hands-on across our demo zones — including an electrifying stunt team showcase that brought the screen world to life right in front of them. A massive thank you to our brilliant speakers, our partners, and every student who brought their energy, curiosity and ambition. It was a celebration of talent, possibility and the next generation of Irish storytellers. Crew Academy South is managed by @filminlimerick / @innovate.limerick and is an initiative of @screenireland #AccessAllAreas #NationalTalentAcademies #TroyStudios #ScreenFutures šŸ“ø: @brian.ok

šŸ”¦ Spotlight on Shadowing šŸ”¦ We caught up with Asst Director Conor Flannery to chat about his experience of the @nationaltalentacademies Shadowing Scheme. . Can you tell us about your background in your role to date ? . I have been working as an AD for over 15yrs. I was a trainee for a long time. Work was very gradual in the beginning and I wanted to take my time and learn everything before upgrading. I got the opportunity to third the final season of Vikings in 2018 and loved it, especially working with the background and building an atmosphere. In recent years I have been 1st AD on many shorts, commercials and 2nd Units. . What made you decide to apply for the shadowing scheme? . One thing I never felt comfortable with was the prep stage of a production. 1st ADs could be on a job months before it starts shooting. Navigating that time and knowing the various targets had always been a slight mystery to me. I feel completely at home running the floor and working with the shooting crew. I wanted to gain that same confidence during prep. . What did the application process involve ? . I applied to the NTA shadowing database, uploaded my CV and answered some questions about my experience. It was a very easy process and thankfully I got accepted. . What did the placement involve from start to finish ? . I was granted access to start 3 weeks before I normally would, on Bloodaxe Season 1. I was able to listen to initial conversations about various methods that would be used to shoot different sequences in the show. I went on recces with the directors and the production designer and saw the process in their decision making. I took part in walk through of sets, show and tells and sat in on meetings with HODs. . What were the key skills you took away from the experience ? . Confidence, what was unknown is now familiar. . How did the experience support your professional development ? . It gave me a sense of comfort to sit in a meeting and start the conversation from the very beginning while not yet knowing any details, answers or solutions. To be ok with that and let the solutions arise from there. . ContšŸ‘‡šŸ¼

What a powerful day at Menopause & the Screen: A Dual Lens – From Perception to Representation @CIFF šŸŽ¬ We explored how menopause is experienced in the screen sector — and how it can be represented with more honesty, complexity and care. ā€œI'm pleased to be part of this conversation. Our industry must prioritise health and wellbeing at every life stage... supporting women behind the scenes, balancing health, life, and work.ā€ — Louise Mathews, Production Designer ā€œSarah Ahmed said, ā€˜Stigma thrives where there is silence.’ I hold that as a tenet — because in creativity, silence never changes anything.ā€ — Max Brady, Producer Let’s keep the conversation going. šŸ“š Educate yourself. šŸŽ¬ Ask for authentic representation. @wftirl @screenguilds @nationtalentacademies @corkfilmfest @bodacious_ireland @jenniferdav @drdebsj #CIFF2025 #MenopauseAndTheScreen #WFTIreland #IrishFilm #ScreenSectorWellbeing
