Students enrolled in a Wildlife Biology course at the Heron School recently joined Yoni Argov, BLM Wildlife Biologist, for a field trip exploring the hidden wonders of pothole ecosystems at Sand Flats Recreation Area. The students practiced identifying macroinvertebrates and learned about the adaptations used by aquatic insects to survive in times of drought. They even found a salamander larva in a nearby pond - so cool! Thank you to our wonderful School to Science sponsors: @utahcf , Carl George Bjorkman Foundation, @rockymountainpower Foundation, @utahdor , @waltonfamilyfdn , and @moonflowercooperative .

We're LICHEN the looks of this job shadow! @gchs.reddevils senior Charles spent the day assisting BYU professor Dr. Steve Leavitt with a project studying the impacts of various forms of recreation on lichen communities at Sand Flats Recreation Area. Charles learned about the process of establishing transects and collected samples that will undergo DNA analysis to provide information on lichen biodiversity. Shout-out to our amazing School to Science sponsors for making experiences like this possible! @utahcf , Carl George Bjorkman Foundation, @rockymountainpower Foundation, @utahdor , @waltonfamilyfdn , and @moonflowercooperative .

@gchs.reddevils sophomore Jacklyn recently joined Allie Donnell, Director of Collections @moab_museum , for the first in a series of job shadows involving archival research into the history of wildfires and flooding in the Moab Valley. Jacklyn's research will be incorporated into a science communication media project to educate Moab residents and visitors about using science and place-based knowledge to build a more fire- and flood-resilient community. Way to go Jacklyn! This job shadow is made possible by the support of @rimtorimrestoration as part of @firebreakmoab 🔥 Thank you to our fabulous School to Science sponsors: @utahcf , @waltonfamilyfdn , Carl George Bjorkman Foundation, @rockymountainpower Foundation, @utahdor , and @moonflowercooperative !

MYTH: Geology is all about stuff that happened millions of years ago. REALITY: Geology is also happening right here, right now! And there's really cool research being undertaken right here in southeastern Utah to understand it. Annnnnd, you can come learn about it while drinking a beer at Ray’s Tavern! Science Moab & @greenriverrocks have teamed up to present a super special Science On Tap event at @rays.tavern on April 11th at 7:30pm during the Green River Rocks Festival. Geologist Sam Bagge will be speaking about her research on sediment mobilization in Cataract Canyon and the upper reaches of Lake Powell. Join us! Make a weekend out of it! Bring your buddies! Photo: Sam Bagge's fieldwork setup. Sam, who recently completed a Master's Degree at the University of Utah, studies the remobilization of sediments deposited by Lake Powell. We had a great time at the Moab Guide Summit this year! Local geology expert (and Science Certified Instructor 🙌) Chris Benson presented “Teachable Moments in Moab Geology,” giving a brief overview of local geologic history, and identifying prime opportunities for guides to share this information with their clients in the field. Shout out to @stewardmoab for organizing this awesome event and for inviting Science Moab to participate! #sciencecertified #scicomm #moab #guides

Wait... sagebrush can impact air quality?! Check out the latest podcast with @universityofutah 's Dr. Daniel Mendoza, who is conducting heat and air quality across the state, including right here in downtown Moab as part of the @moabcity Heat Monitoring Project. Share in our surprise at the reasons that southeast Utah communities might just have the perfect ingredients for higher ozone levels, and how Daniel is investigating this phenomenon. A shout-out to the most quality of partners, City of Moab Sustainability Dept, @moab_library , and the Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring! Listen anytime at the link in our bio.
