Lori is a Licensed Advanced Substance Use Disorder Counselor. She is a graduate of University of Phoenix in Criminal Justice. She has over 25 years of experience working in the social work and criminal justice field and has specialized worked with women in several treatment centers as a case manager, treatment coordinator, and director before becoming Director of Operations at House of Hope. She has worked at House of Hope for a total of 17 years. “I truly believe that change is possible and have had the privilege to see it happen daily. We (employees and clients) all practice and believe in compassion, accountability, and empowering ourselves and our clients to see their true potential as productive and healthy citizens in our communities. To change our world, we must be part of the change and give back.” Lori is a single mother to one daughter.

Sonya Martinez-Ortiz is a woman of color (Chicana/Latine/Latinx), raised and living on Salt Lake City’s Westside, who acknowledges the spaces she occupies have always been indigenous lands. She is Executive Director of the Rape Recovery Center. Sonya has spent over twenty years integrating an equity, inclusion, and anti-oppression lens into her work. She has experience in grassroots advocacy, equity and inclusion strategies, community development, policy advocacy, and trauma work. Sonya has worked as an Assistant Clinical Professor teaching undergraduate and graduate level social work courses.
Sonya holds a Master of Social Work Degree from the University of Utah and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Georgetown’s Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership. She has served the community as a volunteer in a number of capacities, including being a board and commission member for various organizations. She currently serves on the Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission. Sonya has spent most of her career helping build sustainable and equitable programs and organizations. Sonya believes in communities’ ability to heal collectively. She is passionate about social justice. In her free time she enjoys quality time with family, reading, writing, and connecting with the land.

Jen Lopez is the daughter of a Texas farm girl and a Cuban engineer, two cultures that appreciate a clever and creative approach to problem solving. Her art is a colorful fusion of found objects, mid-century modern aesthetics, and intentionally lumpy ceramics. She enjoys combining natural and industrial materials in unexpected ways, and appreciates scissors of both reasonable and unreasonable proportions. Jen encourages her students to play with materials and enjoy the process of making art.

Originally from South Bend, Indiana, Kate moved to Moab as an AmeriCorps VISTA and now works as the Development Director at the Moab Free Health Clinic. She has worked at several Moab health care organizations in addition to the Clinic, including the Moab Regional Hospital and the Southeast Utah Health Department. She graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy and Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music with a degree in Viola Performance and has seamlessly transitioned from music to health care through work in marketing, development, and grant writing. Her personal mission is to serve others before self, work with a team-oriented mindset to accomplish goals that benefit the overall community, and approach all challenges with curiosity and willingness to learn and grow.

Introducing Georgina, another fantastic member of the 2021 Invest in Success cohort!
Georgina (she/her) is a passionate, creative NGO leader with a drive to strengthen community programs. In August 2021 Georgina started as Executive Director for Wasatch Community Gardens in Utah, whose focus is food justice and teaching community members to grow and eat healthy, organic, local food. In 2019, she received her Master’s in Public Administration with an emphasis in Nonprofit Management from the University of Utah. She is currently in her third year of a PhD in Political Science, Nonprofit Management and Civil Society Track, at the University of Utah.
Her expertise lies in organizational development, team leadership, marketing, and designing accessible programs for diverse populations.
Georgina has spent the last seven years in the nonprofit field, leading work to advance college and career readiness technology in Utah schools. As a Nonprofit Consultant she has worked with clients like Westside Leadership Institute, Cold Case Foundation, Comunidad Materna en Utah, Utah Neighborhood Partners, and the Adult Education Center. In 2018, Georgina was chosen to receive the Student Award by the Nonprofit Policy, Practice, & Partnerships (NP3) Section of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA). In 2019, she was published in the International Journal of Public Administration for her work on how nonprofits contribute to providing services for immigrant populations. Most recently, Georgina conducted research throughout Utah to contribute to The State of Utah Strategic Plan on Homelessness.
Georgina is ecstatic to be at Wasatch Community Gardens where she can combine her love for NGOs, accessibility, and getting her hands dirty. When she isn’t working with or researching nonprofits, Georgina loves spending time tending her garden with her wife and their menagerie of rescue animals.
