Quantum Fringe 2026 is underway! This summer, Scotland is once again hosting the Quantum Fringe Festival (QF26) — a two‑month programme exploring the latest developments in quantum computing and its real‑world applications. Led by the University of Edinburgh’s Quantum Software Lab (QSL) in partnership with the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC), the festival brings together researchers, industry, government and students from across the UK and beyond. The programme spans the full quantum ecosystem — from algorithms and software to applications in areas like healthcare, cybersecurity, AI and energy. Some of the events open to the public include: 🧠 AIMday: Quantum Computing (12 June) Work directly with researchers and industry to explore real‑world quantum challenges 🔬 TartanQEC Workshop (24–26 June) International researchers discussing practical approaches to building reliable quantum systems 🎓 Young Quantum Researchers Summer School (1–3 July) A three‑day programme introducing quantum computing through lectures, coding sessions and research insights for senior school students Alongside these public events, the programme also includes a wide range of specialist workshops, industry showcases and invitation‑only activities. 👉 Find out more and explore the full programme via the link in our bio

Our third‑year Informatics students recently showcased their work at the annual System Design Project (SDP) Industry Fair — a highlight of the year and a true test of teamwork, creativity and technical skills. Working in teams, students design and build real-world systems from scratch, combining software, hardware and user experience to solve practical problems. This year’s projects included: ⚽ FoosFusion – a smart automated table football opponent 🦯 HaloAssist – a wearable guidance device for visually impaired users 📚 Electronic Library Fixer – an intelligent system for sorting and organising books From concept to prototype, SDP gives students hands‑on experience of building complex systems and presenting them to industry. 👉 Read more via the link in our bio

Congratulations to Informatics students Nikita and Sachin, among those receiving the Edinburgh Award 👏 Both were invited to the Playfair Library to celebrate their achievements, recognising the work they’ve done alongside their studies. Nikita completed the Award through her work as a Resident Assistant and Student Ambassador, while Sachin achieved it during his time as an Informatics Communications Intern through the Employ.Ed programme The Edinburgh Award is a skills development programme that helps you get more out of your time at university by recognising your extra‑curricular activities and personal development — from internships and ambassador roles to part-time work and volunteering. There are also Informatics‑specific routes, including the Makerspace Technician Award, where students contribute to hands‑on projects while developing technical and teamwork skills. Through the Award, students reflect on their experiences, build key skills, and gain recognition for what they’ve achieved alongside their studies. 👉 Find out more via the link in our bio

Informatics at Pint of Science 2026 Once again, @schoolofinformatics students and staff are taking part in Pint of Science — the international festival that brings research out of the lab and into local pubs. No technical background needed, just curiosity. 📅 18–20 May | Edinburgh 📍 Leith Depot The care crisis meets AI: Are robots the answer? PhD student Elle Miller examines whether humanoid robots could genuinely support independence in care — or risk becoming a technological fix for deeply human challenges. ChatGPT, stochastic parrots and how to fall in love Dr Adam Lopez traces the long and surprising history behind chatbots like ChatGPT, showing how today’s AI builds on ideas developed over more than a century. The trust problem: Understanding AI PhD student Neel Rajani (CDT in Designing Responsible NLP) opens up the AI “black box”, explaining how large language models work — and why transparency and trust matter. 👉 Visit the link in our bio to explore all #Pint26 events happening across Edinburgh 🎟 Tickets on sale now.
