Launch week!! @sandyrussellcreative has been living in the world of scams for a year and a half-- and what a scary world it is. The fraud industry nearly doubled from $1.9 billion in 2019 to $3.3 billion in 2020, with 2021 on track to be the worst year yet as scammers have become more creative and invasive.
Since the launch of ScamSpotter in 2020, we realized that we needed to dig deeper to help protect consumers and their loved ones. And with nearly half a billion dollars lost to gift card scams since the beginning of 2018, we doubled down on our efforts to help spot and stop these gift card scams before they happen. Along with our friends at the @scamspottercsn , we worked with the creative masterminds at @mischiefusa , and the communications wizards at @dvmcpr & @digilant_us on our newest campaign dedicated to educating consumers on the ins and outs of these modern day scams.
To make sure people of all ages see this important message, we launched a custom partnership with @nytimes , and you’ll see Mischief’s smart, engaging creative on @spotify , @youtube , @rokuplayer , @instagram , and @facebookapp , and shared through boots on the ground influencer partnerships.

Working on #ScamSpotter was infuriating. Don’t get us wrong, our partners — @google , Cybercrime Support Network, and @upperquad — were all fantastic to work with. We spent months rage-reading about romance scammers who drain people of their pride and savings, the devilishly clever ways that gift cards are laundered, and how fraudsters are manipulating confusion around COVID-19.
We hope this new approach, focused on three simple rules rather than a long list of dos and don’ts, might help some people suss out a scam they may have otherwise fallen for. (We also accidentally developed an expertise in how to design for seniors! It’s more than a huge font, but that sure helps.) So take a look at the link in our bio, see how well you do on the five-question quiz, enjoy the retro-inspired illustrations (@upperquad as always blows us away with their talent and attention to detail), and consider sharing with the folks in your life who just might need a little help discerning safe from scam.

The last few weeks have put us to work recognizing deep issues within our society, workplaces, and communities. We can and must do better in fighting systemic racism in America. We need to listen, support, and amplify BIPOC voices, while simultaneously putting our values into action.
The recent brutal deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, and countless others — resulting from centuries of violence and inequality — have reinforced how much more work there is to do, and how we personally need to recognize our own privilege to do so. What we’ve witnessed and upheld is heartbreaking and unacceptable. It won’t change unless we get to work, so we’re starting with these commitments: donating, acting, voting, listening, and amplifying.
