It’s hard to describe how gratifying (and a bit surreal) it feels to have all 4 episodes of The Dark Wizard up on HBO Max for the world to see.
This is a deeply personal project - our friendship and creative collaboration with Dean lasted nearly a decade. The adventures we had with him are seared into our memory as visceral, life-defining experiences.
Time and again, some outlandish idea would draw us and our camera gear to a wild and beautiful perch aside the abyss; an initial cycle of nerves and intensity leading up to the big event; then an extended moment of terror and perfection as Dean executed his art. Finally, back on solid ground, a cathartic sense of joy and calm settled in. He was alive - we were all very much alive. As one might gather from watching the series, Dean was not always the easiest guy. But when he was at his best, there was no one more fun and exciting to be alive with.
This series came about through years of dedicated work and talent from our team: Josh Lowell, Halle Johns, Josh Minor, Emily Lea, Kath Carroll, Alex Ferrante, Olivia Ahnemann, Dylan Goerner, Julia Hoppock - the list goes on. Also shout out to
@barrythompsonartist for the amazing journal graphics,
@dandeacon for the original score and title song,
@brutworks for the haunting title sequence,
@2veintestudio for the animation. And, of course, to
@hbodocs for the faith, guidance and incredible partnership.
Profound thanks to all of Dean’s friends, frenemies, filmmakers and co-conspirators for their tales and footage.
And a special thanks to Dean’s sister, Elizabeth Potter, who trusted us to tell Dean’s story. It is an honor of a lifetime.
