A week tonight, it's my annual @nath_brudenell show at @leedsjazzfest - Sunday 24th May - a London x Leeds jazz link-up 🤝 This year, myself and @tom_warriors (legendary London jazz music mentoring organisation), co-host one of their Warriors Rise showcases, featuring young emerging artists from the UK jazz scene 🇬🇧 🎷🎺🎹🥁 Headliner is London tenor sax rising star @d.kayode 🎷 Opener is young @leedsmusicdrama jazz drummer @_mileshardy 🥁 The middle band are Yamikani, led by well known Leeds percussionist/saxophonist Reece Soko-Fogg, who play a fusion of jazz, blues, bebop, afrobeat and Afro-Cuban music. A really fun, magical night last night playing my arrangements of John Zorn’s MASADA books with @nyjouk at Ronnie Scott’s. It’s been a great joy of my life to play the music of the downtown alchemist it never fails to feel exciting and fresh, I’m indebted to the hip young punks of the band for throwing themselves into this and playing themselves, to everyone at NYJO HQ for supporting this project and having me in, and for Paul, Steve and a everyone at Ronnies for giving us the magical evening. Onto to Cardiff for the next one, 26th of March if you’re in Wales you could get to hear some magic…

John Zorn’s MASADA with @nyjouk in Birmingham I love playing this music, it’s been 11 years now and it’s still fresh and radical and full of limitless possibilities. It’s endlessly energising and life affirming work with these hip young punks as they wrestle with these books. Lovely to hear the B:music musicians engaging with these forms. Biggest of love to the downtown alchemist and the band, also to George, Beth, Alicia, Andrew, the folks at B:music who had us in their space and everyone who’s working across this. On February 25th Scarborough Jazz Club welcomes two of Leeds most exciting young jazz musicians, Sam Ehret-Pickett (trumpet and effects) and Reece Soko-Fogg (saxophone). The pair were part of the mesmerising Amon Ra Collective at last year’s special ‘Behind the Sun’ gig that impressed a full audience by their innovative musical direction. Sam is a multi-instrumentalist who regularly plays with groups such as Ancient Infinity Orchestra, Fergus Quill's Imaginary Big Band, The Project and Amon Ra Collective. Reece is an alto-saxophonist influenced by the great players such as Charlie Parker, Jackie McLean and Cannonball Adderley; he attempts to infuse the soundscapes of modal jazz with the energy of be-bop and the fast and rhythmic beat of his Malawian heritage. In the Support slot are some of Scarborough’s most dynamic and prolific young musicians taking influences from classic era ECM artists and contemporary post rock. Doors 7.45. Music 8.00. Something he has been enjoying using a lot recently.
