Its a weird thing taking photos of saxophonists. Our face is never quite what we hope for it to look like...but the sax looks cool so that makes up for it. Unless it's just the way I'm playing in which case some help me, please😂

I feel so fortunate to have this amazing opportunity to just learn and practice in an environment like this. All these facilities and resources. But also To meet people and absorb their knowledge and admire their talent. Music really feeds me with an indescribable energy. To be honest, it's a complicated relationship, but my love will always be there. Just busy feeding it as much as i can♥️

This was a drum session I did today. It was my first engineering/production session I did solo and I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. Although a lot of that is because I was recording such a great drummer ;). There was a slow start, i probably could've been more decisive about things, but you live and you learn.
We set it up that the vocalist and guitarist (who I will tag in a different post) played in the live room, since they were just doing guide tracks for the drummer to perform. It was a weird set up for sure, but it was good for what we needed.

I feel really blessed to be able to work with such talented musicians. It's one of the things I'm going to enjoy about recording other people, is seeing the talent and how other people's minds work creatively.

Recording using a Zoom H5. Tried just an SM58 on vocals and it does the job. Orpheus works better in figure-8 for vocals but I chose to use it as a distant ambient mic (that will be more useful when the environment actually sounds interesting).

Microphones:
Tested C451E, C414, Rode K2, Delta 2, MK319...
The condensers (451 and 414) capture a lot more of the air and harmonics of the flute, with the c414 capturing more low end (cause large diaphragm condensor). 2 different flavours, but weren't what I needed.
The ribbon mic (Delta 2) captures way less high end and maybe this didn't work well in the small, padded, 116 studio, but it did result in an interesting sound that would work in the right context. It was kinda cute :)
The Rode K2 tube mic was a lovely balance of both worlds. Had really full mids and it wasn't too airy or nasal.
The MK319 dynamic mic sounded very similar to the K2, and might've been my favourite, if it didn't have so much buzzing (it's always a noisy studio). I didn't have to boost it much more than the condensor but it was more sensitive to noise. Apart from that, I was excited to hear it sound good :)

In the video I put the 319 behind me and tried panning the 2 (an idea I read online that would sound 'ethereal' - didn't really work, I'll try again some time)

Double bass recording session!
Used Sontronics Orpheus for body, KM184 for some string sound and ended up bringing the second Orpheus back about a meter just to get it out of the way and it sounded great XD! Not gonna use the DI but might have fun with it.
