I signed my own @risd1877 diploma. @johnmaeda must have used disappearing ink when he signed it. I got my BFA in painting in the aftermath of the housing crash. It’s been an adventure finding my way since, and I’m grateful to see the fruits of my labor almost 20 years later. At the end of the day, I learned just as much, if not more from the real (art) world, and a degree can also be just a piece of paper with a signature on it. I’m also saddened to see the world again in a similar, if not worse place. Maybe there will be a time when the policy written reflects the vision and needs of mine and future generations, though I’m not holding my breath. I would hardly call what we’ve collectively had as a say. The last slide was taken after graduation. I had stitched a balaclava to my graduation cap, as we were allowed to modify our caps and gowns as we saw fit. There are just two weeks left to see "Feet Pics" at Ruby/Dakota (@rubydakota ). In addition to the honor of co-curating this exuberant exhibition, I was invited to contribute an artwork centered on the theme of foot fetish. For the occasion, I produced a diptych digital print on canvas documenting a collaboration with an anonymous individual known as Trashman739, with whom we once sold our "trashed shoes" on eBay for beer money. The artwork features the original eBay listing alongside one of the enthusiastic and questionable messages received from the collector.
