SHUG SPEAKS — EPISODE 14 We’re back with Episode 14 of Shug Speaks, this time with Marina Inoue — following on from her hugely successful solo show with us last year, and ahead of an exciting return later this year. Marina’s work sits in that perfect space between control and chaos, tension, instinct, and a real sense of obsession in the process. From painting like she’s possessed (her words, not ours) to chasing that fine balance between freedom and overworking, this one gives a proper insight into how she operates. Expect thoughts on breaking the “rules”, working across multiple canvases at once, and why cinema plays such a big role in shaping her visual language. Full Q&A in the slides → DM us if you would like to check out available works from Marina and for more info on Marina’s upcoming show :) 📸 - @ojharv #marinainoue #shugspeaks #shuggallery #emergingartist #norwichlanes

We’re excited to announce our new group exhibition ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, bringing together 15 artists from across the UK (and those who have trained or live here), each offering a unique perspective on contemporary practice right now. We’ve been a little quiet on the exhibition front recently as we’ve been deep in the process of relocating and renovating, but we’re back. This show marks a new chapter for us, taking place in our brand new gallery space, a beautifully renovated 12th-century building in the historic Lanes, right in the heart of Norwich city centre, following an intensive 8-week transformation. Opening: Friday 27th March, 5–8pm Dates: 27th March – 17th April Location: 12 Lower Goat Lane, Norwich, NR2 1EL Featuring: @alexander_.owen @anmarmirza_ @darcywhent @dean_khalil @elisevbrand @emilybradfordart @gabxmore @harri_newt @jamesrawsonart @kei_azuma @alternativemorality @max1000000_ @niallcampbellstrachan @therealtimgatenby @willhar_ Send us a DM to preview the catalogue Join us for the opening, drinks, music, and a first look at the space! NIGHT THOUGHTS- A Solo Exhibition & Publication Launch from Marina Inoue: Launching this evening, 6-9pm @alternativemorality @marina_inoue A DREAM SOMETIME LAST YEAR:  “Subject is an observer on a dark city street looking up into an apartment with big wide windows. There is a man with a camera, a man holding lights, and a woman with a bob haircut wearing a black dress. She is being kissed by a third, larger man with a denim vest and tattoos and curly hair and he is pinching her face between his thumb and pointer finger while he kisses her. The scene is broken by a sharp spray of blood across the window, a spray, which could only come from a gunshot. There is no sound. Subject seems to know that the truth of this scene is that the annihilation of a family has just taken place. The father figure has come in, and killed the men and his entire family, but has left the woman alive. The subject witnesses her screaming on the phone. The subject starts to run away and as they are running a shoe comes off, the subject has to leave it behind, proceeding to flee with only one shoe into the dark streets.  The subject then wakes. This was a real dream I had that played out in my mind like some kind of B-list Giallo film. The subconscious imitates art which imitates the subconscious, etc. Have you ever had nightmares where you can feel the heat of your own blood as it runs down your chest? Have you ever had sleep paralysis? The shadow in the corner watching you as you sleep. The sensation of being held down and pushed into the bed. The lack of safety in your own room, and the predatory gaze. This is the mounting fear that mirrors the psychosexual genre’s fixation on intruders in the night, real or imagined. In the space between consciousness and slumber, anxiety scripts its own scene.” For all enquiries and a complete works catalogue, please email [email protected] #marinainoue

‘NIGHT THOUGHTS’ Our newest release with Marina Inoue @alternativemorality -Published to coincide with Marina’s newest solo exhibition, launching tomorrow, Friday 30 January, 6-9pm in Leeds. 1st Edition of 100 Softcover, wrapped in printed lace 140x200mm 46 pages Designed by @realbadtime Printed @print.work “One of my earliest memories of watching television is seeing a woman’s dead body: blue, wrapped in plastic, and washed up on the shore of a lake. I was very young. I don’t remember my parents being there or supervising, and this vague image haunted me for years. In my imagination it grew increasingly grotesque, until I realised as a teenager that I had seen the opening scene of Twin Peaks. It must have been 1990, the year it aired, when I was five years old. Psychosexual thrillers of the 1980s and 90s understood the bedroom not as a place of rest, but as a charged psychological arena. Films such as Lost Highway (referenced in We Gotta Go to the Desert, Baby), Fire Walk With Me (referenced in Hostile and Impassioned), numerous James Spader vehicles, and late-night cable films like The Red Shoe Diaries (referenced in I Knew You Before I Ever Saw You and Shadowlands) transformed intimacy into menace. Desire and dread occupied the same seductive frames: cigarettes, red lipstick, moody blue lighting, lacy high-cut lingerie. Night was never neutral. It was when repression loosened, alter-egos emerged, and bad behaviour flourished. This same logic governs the space between consciousness and sleep. The outside world recedes physically, but lingers as a spectre, a watcher. Intrusive thoughts arrive with the confidence of an antagonist who knows the door is locked from the inside. Like obsessive lovers or unstable doubles, they feel both intimate and alien, generated by the self, yet hostile to it. They rehearse anxiety, catastrophe, and fantasy with the relentless pacing of a sleazy thriller tightening toward violence, culminating in a slumber full of fucking nightmares.” Available online now, and from tomorrow in-store at the opening reception. #marinainoue (£12)
