Over this week, Michael (Charlie’s Brother) & a bunch of helpers pulled together the final phase of construction and installation of a memorial seating area in Charlie’s honour. It sits as part of the newly redeveloped City of Port Phillip ‘Eco Centre’ in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens. These gardens were a special place for Charlie and his mates growing up, affectionately known as Botang. They hosted parties, break-ups, romances, fights & feasts from his first years through to his last. Finding a way to convince the City of Port Phillip to include our design in one of their open spaces was bloody tough, but after 6 years of trying we finally got there. Never in our wildest dreams did we think we’d get this spot, in the Botang! Growing up he had a passion for finding the best benches in our neighbourhood. it’s cool to imagine what he would have thought when he stumbled across these and found his way to the middle seat. Our hope is that the benches will be a place for anyone and everyone to sit, chat, eat, drink and enjoy the sunshine in Charlie’s honour Big thanks to Fish, Annabelle & Sidney for their generosity (with timber, accom and tools). April & the team at the Eco-Centre for trusting us and championing the design. Ben Minkley & Leif Canuto for drafting and design trouble shooting, Ruby & Sebby for install help, Mitch for the use of his factory and more, Nikki for their incredible stone work & everyone else who showed up along the way. The site is at the corner of Herbert & Blessington Streets in St. Kilda, go have a look for yourself, tell people you think would want to know and enjoy the space in Charlie’s honour. ❤️
