My journey of creating āFresh Cut Rosesā with the Master @theflyinganvil for the upcoming group show āROSETTAā at @jackywinter.gallery opening Dec 5th.
When @melgrisa invited me to be part of the Rosetta show and mentioned the theme was loosely tied to the rose š¹ I was honoured, but also completely stumped about what to shoot. Itās not a subject Iād naturally gravitate toward, but I was ready for the challenge.
At first, I considered creating something inspired by the energy of āWhere the Wild Roses Growā by Kylie Minogue and Nick Cave. A film clip and song that really stuck with me when I was young.
But the more I explored that direction, the more I realised Iām not quite that visually romantic or lyrical in my approach.
Months passed, and I still didnāt have much. A standard close-up of a rose or a still life didnāt feel right. So I went back to the photographers who shaped me early on: the punk intensity of @jimsaah , and the gritty, abrasive street work of @daidomoriyamaphotography and @bruce_gilden (references in the slides). I wanted to bring that raw, face-first, abrupt energy into this show.
So I set out to shoot roses in full flash images full of contrast, beauty, and confrontation. I ended up capturing the entire series in one night, and it felt exactly right, as though it landed perfectly on the brief Iād set for myself.
I canāt wait to share the final works with you when the show opens on the 5th of December @jackywinter.gallery . š¹
