🍂🌸🍃 Join us on Saturday 9 May at the APA gallery, @collingwood_yards from 3-5pm for the opening event of 5 7 3 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙖𝙩 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙋𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙨 10 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙨.
For over three decades, Fiona Longhurst has cultivated a distinctive visual language grounded in pattern, repetition, and colour. A longstanding artist in the Arts Project Australia studio since 1991, her practice has evolved with quiet persistence, producing a compelling body of work.
Her intricate fields of mark-making are animated by recurring motifs – floral forms, delicate compositional arrangements, and text. Through intuitive layering and patterning, Longhurst builds a personal visual lexicon.
This exhibition celebrates Longhurst’s enduring contribution to the APA studio and the broader contemporary art landscape, offering insight into an artist whose evolving practice is defined by tenderness, a nuanced use of colour, and a quietly compelling sense of introspection.
Coinciding with the exhibition, APA is pleased to announce the launch of a new monograph series in partnership with Perimeter Editions, with Longhurst’s accompanying publication 5 7 3 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘵 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘗𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘴 10 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘴 marking the first release. Copies available for purchase at the exhibition, or pre-order now via the Perimeter Books (@perimeterbooks ) website.

When people visit our studio or gallery, they often say the same thing - “I leave feeling a little bit better about the world.”
Maybe you’ve felt it too? 💙
The art sits at the heart of it all, but it’s the people that make it beat — the artists, the staff, and this incredible community around them.
Today we’re launching our annual fundraising campaign to help keep that feeling alive.
To celebrate, we’ve curated a selection of heartfelt works by APA artists including sequinned hearts by Mark Smith, heart-covered cakes by Anthony Romagnano, and Shoshanna Brott’s beloved heart-bibbed rabbit.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 to support the studio and the artists at the heart of it all.
Every gift, no matter the size, will be celebrated 💙
And while you’re there, tell us what you love about APA. Leave a message with your donation and we’ll add it to our ‘What We 💙’ wall in the studio for APA artists to enjoy.
As studio artist Amani Tia says:
“It’s you guys who make my heart better. That’s what I love here, man. The people.”
Donate today and help keep the studio — and that feeling — alive.

✏️🌀 Last week a group of APA artists headed out to the gallery, for a still-life drawing workshop facilitated by artist Mark Dober and things got big! Working with props from Houses, Spouses, Chrises and Chrises, the gallery quickly filled with larger-than-life still life scenes.
A big thank you to Mark for sharing his expertise with the artists 🙌

𝗔𝗣𝗔 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱! 📣
Congratulations Anthony Romagnano who has been named as a finalist, with his portrait of fellow APA artitst Fiona Longhurst.
Shaped by more than 20 years working side by side in the studio, Anthony’s portrait highlights their shared love of colour and patchwork-like effects in their artistic practices. While he often draws inspiration from popular culture, domestic life and the natural world, Anthony continually returns to capturing day-to-day life in the studio, including self-portraits and portraits of APA staff and fellow artists.

Congratulations Georgia Szmerling who has been named a finalist with her landscape ‘𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦’.
“I appreciate nature – the beauty and the different textures, smells and colours. I find it relaxing and soothing. I like the quietness, not the busyness.
Art is relaxing and calming. It makes other people happy. They enjoy it and I enjoy it. It’s something happy and colourful. I like landscapes and beaches.
I like bright colours, but not too intense. I look at a photo and try to match the colour, and think, ‘Oh, I will try this,’ and if I don’t like it, I just paint over it.” – Georgia Szmerling

🏚️⚠️ Final Days ⚠️🏚️
It’s your last chance to visit 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴, 𝘚𝘱𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴, 𝘊𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘴 at the APA gallery, @collingwood_yards . The 3D Real Estate fantasy of Chris O’Brien, this exhibition is set in and around an abandoned old house in Northcote. The show constructs a world both mundane and surreal: where furniture is stolen in slow motion, burnt beans bubble in the fireplace, and the roar of V8s echo through the TV on lazy afternoons.
