Best Australian Short Documentary awarded to MAHIKA KAI at @AntennaFestival ! The jury shared: “Mahika Kai is a beautiful portrait of cultural custodianship, knowledge and connection, and an urgent call to restore the ecosystems of Wānaka. With its stunning cinematography and sophisticated use of sound and music, the film evokes a strong sense of place and reverence for the environment. At once local and global, intimate and epic, this film creates an expansive experience of time in its short 10 minutes. Congratulations to Kieran and the team, and thank you for sharing this important ancestral knowledge.” Check out the encore screening on Friday 20th Feb from 6:45pm at the Ritz Cinema. __ Thank you to @Tahu_Taiao @TumaiCassidy @PorkBone33 @LeviFmcr , @KorakoEdwards , @ProfessorMatamua and the Whānau for entrusting us with this story, created with an incredible team @KSat21 , Chris Searl, Campbell Milligan, @JamieLoganBrewer @Gizelle_Regan , @RamonaTelecican @GenGrieves , Brescia Jordan, @RahDakota , @MayaInThyme @Simone.Mugavin , @Ryan_Andrew_Lee , Roy Schott, Joe Murdie, Jonny James, Joshua Davy, Myles Maniapoto, Matt Campbell, @Laughton_Lee_Kora , @Danny_Del_Amor , and Deanna Gerlach. 🎥 @Ryan_Andrew_Lee

We’re so pleased to share that @ga.ru.wa 's powerful short film, The Truth About the Telegraph, has been selected to feature at the 35th @flickerfest on Survival Day. Directed by @ksat21 , the film retells the story of the the Overland Telegraph Line, often hailed as a technological feat that connected Australia to the rest of the world, through the experiences of the Kaytetye and Warumungu peoples of Central Australia. These are stories of strength and survival in the face of colonial violence, told through firsthand accounts passed down through generations. The film will screen on 26 January as part of a curated program celebrating outstanding First Nations filmmakers from across Australia. Congratulations team! Read more via @natindigtimes 🔗 The Truth About the Telegraph was commissioned by NCM, with support from Telstra. 📷 Film still of Joseph Jungarayi Williams (Warumungu), courtesy of GARUWA and @ryan_andrew_lee .

A few favourite frames from ‘MAHIKA KAI’ shot over in Wānaka, Aotearoa back in 2023 with director @ksat21 for @monsterchildrenfilms @lakewanakanz @ga.ru.wa Set against the wild terrain of Wānaka, MAHIKA KAI follows a family of Kāi Tahu cultural conservators on their mission to rehabilitate disintegrating landscapes through the regeneration of their traditional food gathering practices. Tūmai Cassidy’s tautiakitaka (guardianship) draws on the wisdom of his ancestors, restoring both Māori food sources such as tuna (eel) and Weka (bird), as well as the language intrinsic to these practices. Tūmai’s Whānau (family) hold a deep connection to, and understanding of, this place. Their efforts in caring for Country are overcoming the destruction of colonisation that caused the decline of their whenua (land), bringing vitality and renewed growth to their communities and the local ecosystems. Starring Tūmai Cassidy @tahu_taiao (Ōtākou, Kāi Te Pahi, Kāi Te Ruahikihiki, Kāti Hawea, Kāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Waitaha, Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāi Takoto and Ngā Puhi) Director - @ksat21 Creative Directors - @ho11ywood24 and @campbelljmilligan Executive Producers - Jamie Brewer, @gizelle_regan Gizelle Regan and @ramonatelecican Producer - @bresciajordan Production Assistant - @simone.mugavin Director of Photography - @ryan_andrew_lee 1st Assistant Camera - @shotbro_nz Gaffer - @joedop_nz Locations Manager - Jonny James Editor - @rahdakota Associate Online Editor - @director.hayhay Cultural Consultant/Te Reo Māori Translator - Myles Maniapoto (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Porou) Colourist - @matuafilm Sound Recordist - @danny_del_amor Composition/score - Laughton Kora (Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Pūkeko) Stills Photographer - @dgerl Production Companies - @monsterchildrenfilms , @lakewanakanz Screened at @sxswsydney @antennafestival @asffestival @diff_nt @maorilandfilm
